  2. Learning Targets • I can estimate products of fractions and whole numbers or mixed fractions. • I can develop and use strategies and models for multiplying combinations of fractions, mixed numbers, and whole numbers.

  3. What Do You Think? • Yuri and Paula are trying to find the following product. • Yuri says that if he rewrites , he can use what he knows about multiplying fractions. He writes: • Paula asks, “Can you do that? Are those two problems the same? • What do you think about Yuri’s idea? • Are the two problems equivalent?

  4. Draw a Model for Start by drawing ¼. Now add more ¼’s so you can show 2 2/3. Now show 2 2/3. Now add up your fractions.

  5. Try multiplying Without the Model • Change to improper fractions. • Multiply the numerators together. • Multiply the denominators together. • How does your answer compare to the answer with the model?
