  3. Christopher Columbus discovered the “New World”. On October 12, 1942 he landed on the island San Salvador in the Bahamas.

  5. San Salvador Island is the peak of a submerged mountain that rises 15,000 feet from the ocean’s floor.

  6. The island was originally named Guanahani by the Lucayan Indians. Christopher Columbus renamed it San Salvador, which means Holy Savior.
