WHAT SUBAK IS? • Subak is farmers organization which is managing water irrigation in a certain field rice, to get water from a certain source, managing at least one subak tample, and internally and externally autonomy of their organization. • A group of several subaks which get irrigated water from a water source, named by subak-gde (eg. Subak B1, B2, and B3, in previous slide). • A group of several subaks in one or more rivers, called by subak-agung, and yet one of them has to be in form of subak-gde.

  5. (Continued…) • There is no structural relationship between subak and village. In contrast, there is coordinal relationship between subak and village. • The area of one subak could be in one village/ district/residence or more.

  6. The Role/Function of Subak • Water distribution. • Maintenance (canal, tample, etc). • Mobilization of resources (contribution of money, manpower, etc) • Conflicts solution. • Ritual activities. RULE IN USE (AWIG-AWIG)

  7. RICE FIELDS, CALM AND QUIET, MANAGED BY SUBAK SYSTEM. WILL THEY BE SUSTAINABLE?

  8. Picture’s detail: • The rice fields shown above are managed by subak in Bali. Shown that the slope of topography. • Farmers build their rice fields based upon the available contour soil. Farmers do not destroy the exist soil environment. • Even though it could be inefficient, farmers still do it, in order the soil will be not eroded.

  21. HARMONY OR TRI HITA KARANA PHILOSOPHY OF SUBAK • Tri Hita Karana is a foundation of subak system in Bali. Tri Hita Karana (THK) means, three factors of the happiness /joyful of human beings. Tri = three; Hita = joyful/happiness ; and Karana = the caused factor. • To get happiness, so human being must take harmony with God, with others, dan with nature.

  22. What is Subak Intangible Haritage ? • Harmony and Togetherness • In Bali term, we call : the Tri Hita Karana Philosophy or Concept.
