A little history……. • SSI: Three Phases - • Phase One – Occupation and Skills Shortages • Key Sectors: Advanced Manufacturing and Healthcare • Key Occupations: CNC Machinists, Welders, Polishers, Registered Nurses, Respiratory Therapists • Phase Two – Root Causes Report • Primary causes: inefficient processes, pipeline constraints, training constraints • Phase Three – Solutions Report

Proposed Solutions: Process Innovations – lean manufacturing tuition assistance salary replacement Pipeline Expansion - Training Enhancements - MSN Nursing Program Virtual Reality methodology Increased flow through RN clinicals Certifications ESL for Nurses 21st Century skills awareness Respiratory Therapists and training CNC Machinist Work Ethic and Basic Skills

  4. DWD Funding Decisions: Total Award for Region 2: $1, 583,112 Advanced Manufacturing = $928, 171 Health Care = $654, 941

  5. Funded Projects: Advanced Manufacturing • Tuition grants = $398,000 Designed to provide assistance to new, incumbent, or displaced workers seeking to upgrade skills to CNC Machine Operator or Welder – outcomes for many of these students will be MSSC Certification. A portion of this training will take place at regional Ivy Tech Community College campuses, and a strong focus will be directed toward the orthopedics equipment industry. Outcomes: enrollments – 338 completions – 282 MSSC Certificates awarded – 144 This project includes WorkKeys assessments by WorkOne personnel.

  6. Advanced Manufacturing – other funded projects • Training solutions – equipment Total award = $122,000 With skills training for the orthopedics industry in mind, this amount is dedicated to helping Ivy Tech CC purchase equipment for the new Orthopedics skills center in Warsaw • Virtual Reality methodology, to be used by both Ivy Tech and WorkOne trainers Total award = $70,000 This will fund the final portion of the VR training module for CNC Machinists …

  7. Advanced Manufacturing - 21st Century Skills • Forum for the Future Century Center, South Bend September 28, 2006 This will be a demonstration and discussion of future technologies, emergent skills, emergent occupations and opportunities. Award = $35,000 for this and other community/school forums.

  8. Funded Projects: Health Care • Pipeline Expansion: • Master of Science in Nursing program at Indiana University South Bend - $100,000 for initial faculty salaries. • Clinical simulations: nursing simulators for laboratories, clinical settings, and community awareness - $100,000 http://www.laerdal.com/document.asp?docID=1556691

  9. Other Health Care Projects • Respiratory Therapy: • Grant will provide start-up funds for Ivy Tech Community College RT program, designed to relieve current shortage of Respiratory Therapists. Award = $260,762 for both faculty salaries and some laboratory equipment. • ESL Assistance = $12,000 • Funding will be provided for materials to help ESL students improve their language skills so that they can more easily pass the nursing program entrance examination.
