Si2 – Innovation Through Collaboration Axioms on Standards Business drives standards, markets drive their success Mature industries understand where to standardize, where to compete ¾ of all standards created never succeed in the market Creating standards are hard; not having them is harder Net: Standards are hard to do right, but they remain essential drivers of business / innovation

  3. Si2 – Innovation Through Collaboration What Has Changed in Recent Years? Businesses are more inter-dependent e.g. Fabless, fab, IP, EDA,... Technologies are more inter-dependent Geographies (cultures) are more inter-dependent Design and mfg are more inter-dependent EDA is intertwined with everything above IP rights are now intertwined with EDA

  4. Si2 – Innovation Through Collaboration User discovers a timing problem Fix by upsizing driver, but wait... This creates a power problem! Fix by inserting PD and PSO logic, but wait... This creates a testability problem!! Fix by adding a new scan flop, but wait... This creates a new timing problem!!! Fix by re-routing critical path, but wait... This creates signal integrity problem (sigh)‏ EIC: Everything is Connected! E I C

A: offer them value; visit them; be patient How to manage the “EIC” technical complexities? A: take flow-centric view; find synergies; APIs How to balance needs of users and suppliers for sustainable solutions? A: Be market-centric; listen and adapt; engage How to handle IP rights / legal constraints? A: listen to members' legal staff; be proactive

Si2 – Innovation Through Collaboration Recommendations Be clear about your business objectives, and where standards may be important Don't ignore the “consequences of failure” Be proactive – the future is how we define it Reinforce priority with your business partners Sitting on the sideline does not help Actively drive and participate in WG's Contributions can be a strong win-win Keep focused on getting business results!
