  2. 1960 TIMELINE • Sprite was introduced by coca cola. • Joanne Woodward receives first gold star on the Hollywood walk of fame. • The Beatles began a forty eight night engagement at the Indra Club in Hamburg, Germany. • The polaris missile is test launched. • The historic cartoon, The Flintstones was aired on TV. • And France tests the first A bomb in the Sahara desert.

  3. 1961 TIMELINE • President Kennedy advises all prudent family's to have a bomb shelter. • The DNA genetic code is broken. • The IBM selectric typewriter is introduced to the market. • Construction of the berlin wall begins, separating East & West Berlin. • The Vietnam war officially begins. • Barbie gets a boyfriend when the Ken doll is introduced. • Russians send the first man into space.

  4. 1962 TIMELINE • The Beatles first record “My Bonnie” with Tony Sheridan is released by Polydor. • The Rolling Stones make their debut at London's Marquee club, 165 Oxford street. • Dr. NO, the first James Bond film is premiered in the UK. • ABC begins colour telecasts for 3.5 hours a week. • Diet Rite is the first sugar-free soda was introduced. • Pull tabs on cans were also invented.

  5. 1963 TIMELINE • President Kennedy is assassinated. Stores & businesses close for the entire weekend & Monday in tribute. • Film goddess Marilyn Monroe is found dead of an apparent overdose, it became the most controversial death on record. • The Coca-Cola company debuts its first diet drink, TaB Cola. • The first broadcast of Doctor Who is broadcasted in the UK.

  6. 1964 TIMELINE • Ford Motors introduced the “Ford Mustang”. • Plans to build the New York, World Trade Centers were announced. • The Beatles hold the top 5 positions in the billboard to 40 singles in America. • OO7 from Russia with love, was shown in the United states of America.

  7. 1965 TIMELINE • 34 people died in Watts ghetto riot. • 190,000 troops are taking part in the Vietnam war. • 32,000 people make the 54 mile “freedom march” from Salma to Montgomery. • Killers Richard Hickock & Perry Smith, convicted of murdering 4 members of the Herbert Clutter family are exicuted by hanging. • Japan new bullet train opens. • New York City has a great blackout.

  8. 1966 TIMELINE • Star Trek television series airs. • The fourth of the four lost H bombs is found of the coast of Spain. • The Beatles said in an interview for the London standard, “we are more famous than Jesus now”. • How the Grinch stole Christmas, is shown for the first time and then it became an annual tradition and best loved film ever based on a Dr. Seuss book.

  9. 1967 TIMELINE • The Rolling Stone magazine is founded. • Communist China announces that they have in possession the H bomb. • Dr. Christian Barnard preforms the first heart transplant. • Elvis & Priscilla are married in Las Vegas. • Walt Disney’s full-length animated film, The Jungle Book, the last animated film personally supervised by Disney is released.

  10. 1968 TIMELINE • Martin Luther King,Jrwas assassinated. • Saddam Hussein becomes vice chairman at the revolutionary council in Iraq. • The white album is released by the Beatles. • The film, Oliver! A hit in London’s Broadway shows is released and then went on to win in the academy award for best picture.

  11. 1969 TIMELINE • Neil Armstrong walks on the moon. • After 147 years the last issue of The Saturday Evening Post, is produced. • At the Academy Awards ceremony for the best Actress, a tie between Katharine Hepburn & Barbra Streisand, results in the 2 sharing the Best Actress Oscar. • John Lennon returnes his OBE to protest against the British governments support of the US war in Vietnam. • Monty Python’s, Flying circus airs it’s first episode on the BBC.

Some UK history from the 60’s • England won the world cup. • The first English man in space. • In the 1960’s the population of Britain was about 53 million. • The average house price was £2.530. • A loaf of bread was about 5p. • A season ticket for Manchester united was £8.50, were as today its over £700. • Sliced bread became available in shops. • Coco Pops were launched. • Most houses had a fridge and cooker. • Nearly every house now had electricity.

  13. The Mods 60’s sub culture’s Mod (from modernist) is a subculture that originated in London, England, in the late 1950s and peaked in the early-to-mid 1960s.

  14. Greasers 60’s sub culture’s Greasers are a working class youth subculture that originated in the 1950s among young northeastern and southern United States street gangs. Greasers wore Jeans, White shirts, Jackets, and a hair style called the D.A. The style and subculture then became popular among other types of people, as an expression of rebellion.

The styles of the late fifties, the Chanel suit and the full skirt were still popular. By the middle of the 60s, the mini was in. • And there was alot of big fashion designers in the 60’s, with such names like, Biba, Pierre Cardin, Givenchy, Mary quant….and many more…
