ASM Components • Ground Meteorological Station (WXTC) • Image Quality Monitors • Polaris Seeing Monitor • Differential Image Motion Monitor (DIMM) • All-Sky Camera (ASC; 2 x 140 x 90 degrees) • Satellite Sky Monitors • Scintillation Detection and Ranging (SCIDAR) • Future components for aircraft detection and avoidance, atmospheric extinction, sky brightness, and seeing predictions

  3. Highlights (Q4/2008) • Polaris monitor wind shield completed • First routine measurements with the DIMM obtained • WXTC relocated on the LBT roof and in routine operation • Snow and icing problems plague WXTC operation and safety

Open Issues • Technical • WXTC • Compass unreliable • Winter weather conditions problematical • Difficult access on the roof • Polaris monitor • Inconsistent results at times • Affected by vibrations • Location problematical • DIMM • Commissioning still in progress • Pointing inconsistent particularly for large offsets • Data not verified as yet • Data access and integration with TCS and instruments not implemented yet

Open Issues • Technical (continued) • All-Sky Camera • Location and mounting needs to be defined and fabricated • SBIG operational software implemented • Data reduction steps defined and optimized • Schedule • DIMM highest priority for image quality assessments • WXTC moved to a 40-60 ft tower Q2-Q3 2009 • ASC deployment TBD after new WXTC installation • Reworked DIMM-PSM being discussed

  7. Open Issues • Financial • Relocation of WXTC on site and installation on a 40-60 ft tower will be expensive • SBIG All-Sky cameras procured but mounting is required. Deployment tied to the WXTC relocation. • Additional SBIG Polaris monitor required at $2500 • All computers already procured • Resource • Limited development, engineering, and software resources in the group • Growing science support and MODS1 delivery and commissioning will limit progress

  8. Planning (Q1/2009) • DIMM in routine use during partner science blocks and problems understood and fixed with MPIA • WXTC tower concepts outlined and reviewed with LBTO and MGIO • Preliminary All-Sky camera system deployed at MDM for testing and optimization • Continue to use the WXTC in the current configuration
