  2. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month National Breast Cancer Awareness Month educates women about the importance of early detection. More and more women are getting mammograms to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages. As a result, breast cancer deaths are on the decline. Encourage the women in your life to get mammograms on a regular basis. For more information, visit www.nbcam.org or www.komenindy.org Q: What barriers keep women from getting mammograms on a routine basis? A: The top barriers, in women's words, are: "I don't need a mammogram because my doctor has never recommended I have one." "I have no breast problems, so mammography isn't necessary." "I have had a mastectomy (double mastectomy, radical mastectomy) and don't have breasts.“ "I don't have a family history of breast cancer“ Other barriers are: Fear about pain from the procedure. Fear of a diagnosis of breast cancer. Concerns about the financial burden of diagnostic procedures and treatment, if needed. No recent clinical breast examination or Pap test. No routine source of health care. www.mutauzeta.webs.com The MTZ Newsletter is intended for internal use only.

  4. Member Spotlight SororTafadzwaMwashita Scholarship, Sisterly Love, Service, Finer Womanhood. These four attributes are characteristics that set the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta apart and these are some of the characteristics that I have cultivated within my own life. Being a lady of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc, Mu Tau Zeta Chapter embodies reaching higher scholastic goals, serving others, developing life-long bonds, excelling as a leader and becoming the best woman I could be. Being a member of this sorority has provided a solid framework for my personal growth and also an opportunity to contribute to the sorority in my unique way. I am a magna cum laude graduate from the University of Indianapolis with a Bachelor in Science in Biology, and also a Masters in Biology from Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). I appreciate that research knowledge contributes to the overall development of better medical therapies that ultimately save more lives today than ever before, however I also realized after working in a lab for two years that I yearned to work in a field that was involved in direct healthcare. This lead to my decision to obtain a degree in nursing. Now, I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at the Indiana University School of Nursing (IUSON). After I have completed this degree I would like to pursue graduate education in nursing, hopefully culminating in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. Reaching out to the community is an activity I am passionate about and I hope to continue to give back as much as I can. I volunteered at the Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis until August 2007. I worked the evening shift in the library, where volunteer staff ensured that the library was accessible to patients and parents. With no volunteer available the library is closed. I did not fully understand the importance of this service until a parent thanked me for being there that evening, as she desperately needed to use the computers. Currently, I am involved in the Servants in Action Ministry at Eastern Star Church. This ministry provides volunteer services to different areas within the church. These are the few activities that I take part in on my own. I believe that the different programs that Zeta Phi Beta sponsors would help me to become even more involved within the community. This not only enriches my life, but it enriches the lives of those that we reach out to in the community. I am honored to be involved in Mu Tau Zeta Chapter because this provides an excellent opportunity to be involved with a group of www.mutauzeta.webs.com The MTZ Newsletter is intended for internal use only.
