  3. READ THE QUESTIONS CAREFULLY!!!

  4. Final QuestionONLY QUOTE IF YOU ARE GOING TO ANALYSE THE LANGUAGE IN THE QUOTE. The final question will ask you to find points the writers: • Agree on. Start your answer with a short comment on the topic they agree on, eg; Both writers agree Miss Ross is awesome. Read through the two passages, focusing on topic sentences and decide what the MAIN three points are. Bullet point your answer, providing evidence from BOTH passages. This can be ideas rather than just quotations. • Disagree on. Start your answer with a short comment on the topic they disagree on; The writer’s disagree on whether or not Miss Ross is awesome. Again, decide what that main 3 points are and provide each writer’s opinion on that point using evidence in ideas or quotations. • A combination of both. You MUST show both agreement and disagreement. Explain what the main basis for each is eg; The writers agree that Miss Ross is awesome, they disagree on how gorgeous she is. Then, three main areas.

Introductions • Intros: T (title) A (author) R (reference to question) T (theme) S (summary) ‘The Kite Runner’ by KhaledHosseini is a novel in which the theme of guilt is made clear through the actions of the protagonist, Amir. In the novel, Amir allows his friend to be raped, doing nothing to help him and consequently lives the rest of his life feeling guilty for what he has done. ‘Thirteen Steps and the Thirteenth of March’ by Douglas Dunn is a poem in which the personality of the poet is gradually revealed through sensitive imagery. The poem deals with the theme of love, expressed through Dunn’s selfless service of his dying wife to begin; effectively losing the personality he once had to become her servant. As their time slides away , we begin to see who they were as a couple and finally who Dunn is as person.

  6. Conclusions Ultimately, ‘Thirteen Steps and the Thirteenth of March’, by Douglas Dunn is a poem in which the poet’s personality is lost to the service of his wife. He gladly loses himself in her and only emerges in her sad passing. “Sad? Yes. But it was beautiful also”. ‘The Kite Runner’ by KhaledHosseini is a novel in which the theme of guilt is strongly conveyed through the childhood actions of the main character, Amir. The decision he made as a child causes this theme to permeate his adult life and ultimately force him to make a selfless decision.

  7. Embedding techniques in your writing.Answers to questions on prose fiction should address relevantly the central concern(s)/theme(s)of the text(s) and be supported by reference to appropriate techniques of prose fiction such as:characterisation, setting, key incident(s), narrative technique, symbolism, structure, climax,plot, atmosphere, dialogue, imagery . . . When discussing both the poem and the text you should be referring to techniques. Instead of saying, for example; In the poem … Instead of this … Dunn’s personality is hidden in his service of his dying wife and her guests, “I brought them tea or sherry like a butler” You might say … Dunn’s personality is hidden in his service of his dying wife which is evident in the simile, “I brought them tea or sherry like a butler” In the text … Instead of this … On the morning of the rape the sky is clear, reflecting the childhood innocence of both characters, “The sky was a blameless blue” You might say … On the morning of the rape, the setting makes clear the childhood innocence of both characters in the pathetic fallacy, “The sky was a blameless blue”

  8. TOPIC AND LINKING SENTENCES Topic sentences should outline the point you will make in the paragraph. The novel opens with a conversation with Rahim Khan in which he tells Amir, “there is a way to be good again” straight away we are aware that something bad has happened to our protagonist the he needs to make up for; making the mood of guilt clear. Linking sentences, link back to the question and on to the next paragraph. The implication, is that this day is not one Amir looks on fondly, it is one which fills him with guilt.
