  2. Issues 30% of WV children under age 5 live in poverty; more than half below 200% FPL Children in poverty at high risk for poor outcomes Identifying social, emotional, behavioral and developmental problems important WV ranks 44th in child well-being on Kids Count Key Indicators

  3. Health Care Providers Have an important role in identification, referral, education. Bright Futures sets new standard. Payers developing quality measures and will be asking for quality data in the future. Health care providers can help guide Payers on quality measures and help WV pediatric practices meet high standards for screening and referral.

  4. Background: Not New in WV “Kidnitiative” – a project of the AAP (WV) worked with about 10 practices on developmental screening. WV still part of Partners in Prevention (PIP) Regional Network Maternal and Child Health gave out 200 “Ages and Stages” screening kits. WV Primary Care Association worked with 4 Centers on developmental approach to child health; provided overview of Ages and Stages.

  5. Proposal Create committee on screening of young children as part of Perinatal Partnership. Identify physician & nurse practitioner champions in each part of the state. Identify others in early childhood education, developmental disabilities, etc to participate on committee Collaborate/coordinate with MCH, Medicaid, CHIP, HKFC

  6. Committee Agenda Promote physician/nurse practitioner leadership; engage three medical schools Survey provider community regarding current practice in child development screening and barriers to change Review AAP recommended instruments and agree on one or more instruments to be standard for WV. Advise on information technology; reporting of quality measures Develop Plan for training for year two Advise CHIP/Medicaid on quality measures Advise HKFC on Parent Education

  7. Resources Benedum Grant of $50,000 for staff support, travel and meetings Honorariums for physician champions through CHIP Opportunity for national speaker at Perinatal and Child Health Summit in December 2012
