GuideStar UK: What is it? A data source A comprehensive on-line directory of registered charities • Launched 12th December 2005 – 167,000 registered charities in England & Wales • Directly addresses the lack of information on charities recognised by the Cabinet Office Strategy Unit in 2002 • Funded by an implementation grant from HM Treasury Invest to Save Budget & private funds • Supported by Charity Commission & Home Office
GuideStar UK: Why? • Links people to charities – service users, donors, volunteers and supporters • Supports & promotes efficient & effective charities • Facilitates public education on the work of charities • Promotes public trust & confidence • A resource for all intermediary & infrastructure bodies • A platform for innovation The Charity “Google” & Charity “Yellow Pages”
GuideStar UK: What we do? • Capture comprehensive information on all registered charities in England & Wales • Present this information on a free public website • Provide every single charity with their own website • Give charities the opportunity to place additional information on the website • Use an innovative & powerful search engine • Provide relevant supporting information • Supply data to organisations that undertake or support charitable activities
Where does the data come from? • Weekly extract from the Charity Commission’s Central Register of Charities • Financial & Narrative Data captured from Trustees’ Annual Reports & Financial Statements filed with the Charity Commission & Companies House • Information provided voluntarily by charities on-line using the GuideStar UK “Update my charity”

GuideStar UK: What we have achieved? • Over 1 million charity web pages viewed since launch • Over 25,000 charities have accessed their pages • Over 11,000 charities have augmented their information by using “Update my charity” • Between 1,000 &1,500 daily visitors to the website • Users have visited over 118,000 charities • On average users view 14 web pages each visit • Basis for NCVO UK Voluntary Sector Almanac • Radio 2 Website of the week

Use “Update my charity” to maximise the value of your entry on GuideStar UK: • Make sure the search engine finds your charity • Ensure that the contact information is correct • Upload your logo to personalise your entry • Provide information on how visitors to the website can help your charity – donate, volunteer etc. • Refine & supplement the information on activities & accomplishments – remember this is a website • Upload key documents such as impact reports, newsletters & press releases, add photographs.
What can infrastructure organisations do?
