  1. Types of TIDES(write down the underlined. It will be on the quiz.) Sidney Huffman BellaAmador

  2. TIDES What is a tide? A tide is referring to when the oceans’ surface rises and falls. Tides are caused mainly by the differences in how much the moon’s gravity pulls on different parts of Earth. The water rises for about six hours, then falls for about six hours, in a regular tidal cycle. The force of gravity pulls the moon and earth toward each other.

  3. TIDE CYCLE Low tides occur between high tides. The moon’s gravity causes the high tide on the side closest to the moon.

  4. Tide cycles The water flows towards the part of the ocean, let’s call it part A, and creates a high tide. A high tide is the state of the tide when at its highest level. PART A

  5. Tide cycles The force of the moon’s gravity at high tide is not stronger than the force of the moon’s gravity on Earth as a whole. Earth is pulled toward the moon more strongly than on the far side of Earth, called part B. PART B PART A

  6. Tide cycles Water flows on part B, and a high tide occurs there, too. Between parts A and B, water flows away and causes low tides on the North and South Poles. A low tide is the state of the tide when at its lowest level. PART B PART A

  7. Tide cycles At any time, there are two places with high tides, and two places with low tides on Earth.

  8. Tide cycles As Earth rotates, one high tide stays on the side of the Earth facing the moon. The second high tide stays on the opposite side of the Earth. Each location on Earth sweeps through those high and low tides every 25 hours or so.

  9. Tide cycles Here’s a another way of how they’re explained.

  10. Different types of tides Diurnal Tides, Semi-Diurnal Tides, Mixed Tides, SpringTides, Neap Tide, King Tide, High Tides, and Low Tides.

  11. Different types of tides Diurnal Tides: A single high and a single low tide occur each day. They tend to occur in certain areas when the moon is at its furthest from the equator.

  12. Different types of tides Semi-Diurnal Tides: Two high and two low waters occur daily and are of relatively similar ranges. This type is more likely to occur when the moon is over the equator.

  13. Different types of tides Mixed Tides: These tides also tend to occur as the moon moves furthest north or south of the equator. They are typified by large variances in tidal ranges during the two daily tides.

  14. Different types of tides Spring Tides: Either of the two tides that occur just after a new moon when the tide-generating force of the sun acts in the same direction of the moon, causing the greatest rise and fall in tidal level.

  15. Different types of tides Neap Tides: A neap tide that happens when the difference between high and low tide is small, the lowest level of high tide. Neap tide occurs twice a month.

  16. Different types of tides King Tides: These are high tides that occur when the gravitational pull of the sun and the moon are in alignment. When these tides happen at the same time, water levels can rise even higher.

  17. And that’s a tide!ANY QUESTIONS?

  18. Tide quiz

  19. 1. What is a king tide? A. These are high tides that occur when the gravitational pull of the sun and the moon are in alignment. B. Either of the two tides that occur just after a new moon when the tide-generating force of the sun acts in the same direction of the moon C. These tides also tend to occur as the moon moves furthest north or south of the equator D. Happens when the difference between high and low tide is small, the lowest level of high tide

  20. 2. HOW OFTEN DOES THE OCEAN RISE AND FALL? A. Rises for about eight hours, then falls for about eight hours B. Rises for about six hours, then falls for about seven hours C. Rises for about six hours, then falls for about six hours D. Rises for about five hours, then falls for about two hours

  21. True or false 3. The force of the moon’s gravity at high tide is stronger than the force of the moon’s gravity on Earth as a whole. 4. Tides are caused mainly by the similarities in how much the moon’s gravity pulls on different parts of Earth. 5. The force of gravity pulls the moon and earth away from each other. 6. A high tide is the state of the tide when at its highest level.

  22. 7. At any time, there are two places with _____ tides, and two places with _____ tides on Earth. 8. As Earth rotates, one high tide stays on the side of the Earth facing the moon. The second high tide stays on the __________ side of the Earth. 9. Each location on Earth sweeps through those high and low tides every ____ hours or so. (number)

  23. 10. What is a semi-diurnal tide? A. A single high and a single low tide that occur each day. B. Two high and two low waters occur daily and are of relatively similar ranges. C. The lowest level of high tide. D. A tide that occurs twice a month.
