  1. District heating and the environment

  2. 1985

  3. TODAY

  4. In 1952, we started out our mission towards an energy system with high efficiency and low environmental impact • In total, our district heating system supplies more than 60% of the heating demand • in Göteborg

  5. Heat load of principle for the district heating net in Gothenburg

  6. District Heating - environmental advantages in three dimensions • Local: Improved urban air quality (Particles, SO2, NOx,) • Regional: Reduced acidification (SO2, NOx), • Global: Reduced emissons of greenhouse gases (CO2) Reduced consumption of resources

  7. Linked environmental impact - Climate change and resource efficiency … Our main focus is to reduce environmental impact by using selected sources of energy and increasing efficiency in production, distribution and use Climate c change Resource efficiency

  8. Increased district heat production with reduced emissions

  9. How much energy do we use ? Use Transformation Transports Purification Extraction Primary energy

  10. Rya Combined Heat & Power Plant – the energy plant of the future

  11. Rya Combined Heat & Power Plant • Fired by natural gas, and with diesel as reserve fuel • Future transfer to gasified biofuel possible • Construction began in 2004. The plant was taken over in december 2006 • Investment amounts to SEK 2 billion • Ensures the supply of electricity for important social functions in Göteborg • 35 % of Göteborg’s heat requirements are met using district heating from the Rya Combined Heat & Power Plant • 30 % of Göteborg’s electricity requirements are met using electricity produced by the Rya Combined Heat & Power Plant

  12. Technical data for the plant • Maximum fuel input 600 MW • Electric output 261 MW • Heat output 292 MW • Total efficiency 92,5 % • Operating time 4000 h • Electricity prod. 1250 GWh • Heat prod. 1450 GWh • NOx 10 mg/MJbr • Ammonia slip 5 ppm • Black start & ”Island mode operation”

  13. Green products • District Heating, Good Environmental Choice • Approved by Naturskyddsföreningen

  14. A sustainable Göteborg Society

  15. Our vision - a sustainable Göteborg is to be reached by : • Use of renewable energy sources • Efficiency in production, distribution and use of energy • Research & development
