  17. BEng(Hons) Civil Engineering • Assessment and Progression • Pass mark is 40% (35% in a component may be accepted). • You should pass all subjects at a Level before starting the next. • Decisions are made at Exam Boards.

  18. Assessment and Progression • Near-misses may be allowed a REFER, a second attempt at the work with a capped mark. • More serious failures may result in • RE-TAKE. Do the module again without attendance, mark capped. • REPEAT Do the module again with attendance, mark capped. • Only THREE attempts are allowed • Re-assessments have a capped Mark of 40% • Again, decisions are made at Exam Boards. These decisions are PROVISIONAL until final board which is held in June.

  19. Assessment and Progression Marks for Late Assignments are reduced using a standard tariff. Up to 5 calendar days late: 10 marks subtracted but if the assignment would normally gain a pass mark, then the final mark to be no lower than the pass mark for the assignment. Up to 10 calendar days late: 20 marks to be subtracted but if the assignment would normally gain a pass mark, then the final mark to be no lower than the pass mark for the assignment. More than 10 calendar days late: 0 mark to be awarded

  22. BEng(Hons) Civil Engineering Award Class Determined using the “ACM20” calculation "A weighted average of the marks from modules worth a total of 200 credits at Levels 2 and 3 combined, including the marks from modules worth no more than 80 credits at least at Level 2 (weighted 30 percent) and marks from modules worth at least 120 credits at Level 3 (weighted 70 percent), which represent the best marks achieved by a student at those Levels."

  29. BEng(Hons) Civil Engineering • General advice: Read New Civil Engineer each week. Buy a textbook for each subject (but not yet). If you are already employed in the construction industry, keep a comprehensive diary! If you want something, ask for it. Enjoy the course.

  30. Finding the Course Too Difficult? • Year 1 entrants may transfer to the Foundation Year • Year 2 entrants may transfer to Year 1 • You must transfer BEFORE the 2nd week of attendance, otherwise wait until next Session. • After 2 weeks of attendance, students are officially registered on a module. At this point, there is no going back!

  31. Avoid Plagiarism! • The rules are very SIMPLE! • Treat the completion of coursework as if you were doing it under examination conditions i.e. No help from anyone! • The source of ANY information used in the completion/support of a piece of coursework should be referenced. • Do not help others with the completion of their coursework. • The university has a policy to deal with any detected use of unfair means. • If detected, the maximum penalty is expulsion from the course.

  32. BEng(Hons) Civil Engineering • You should have from me • Course Handbook which includes • Course Calendar for 2012-13 • Please do not book holidays during term time! • Copy of Signed Module Choice Form • I should have from you • Signed Module Choice Form • Completed Part-Time Student Details Form • Completed Module Exemption Form
