  1. Welcome Families! Thank you for being here! • Please find your child’s desk. • Read his/her note to you! Feel free to write a response below the note. • We will begin as soon as most seats are filled. • This is not a good time to ask how your child is doing; I will be passing around a conference sheet tonight. 

  2. Welcome to PRISM 4th grade! Curriculum Night 2011

  3. A note from the Mrs. Porter in the office: I have been receiving many phone calls about PIV passwords.  A little background:  ALL BSD households were mailed a PIV password letter last week.  Included in this letter is their user name, a student password and a parent password. If someone says they did not receive a letter …. Or, lost their letter, they can come to the office with ID to ask us to give them their password.  We cannot give out passwords over the phone.

  4. HOW TO REACH ME: • 7:00 am -4:00 pm. • Spiritridge (425) 456-5900 /voice mail at (425) 456-5958. • headyt@bsd405.org

  5. WEEKLY NEWSLETTER: • Heady’s Headlines • Expect to receive one via email each Friday. • If you miss seeing one, the newsletter is also posted to my website every Friday. • Each week, please sign the parent signature slip inside your child’s Red Folder so that I know you received it.

  6. REQUESTS FOR ASSIGNMENTS • No guarantee I will have time to prepare a packet of work. Assignments grow out of lessons, so our pacing is not predictable weeks in advance. • In case of illness, an extension is fine!

  7. PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES: • Look for sign up sheet that is coming around • If none of these times work for you, let me know generally good times. • After 4:15pm isn’t open.

  8. CLASSROOM LEARNING COMMUNITY • You/Me game • Conflict Resolution • Virtues Project

  9. ASSESSMENT: • Children are primarily assessed on their in-class performance. • HW is assessed for thoughtful completion. • Book reports are a significant part of the reading grade. Generally the scale we use is: • 4= exceeds Prism expectations • 3= meets Prism expectations • 2= approaching (not meeting)Prism expectations • 1= below Prism expectations

  10. HOMEWORK • Each Monday, students will receive a weekly homework assignment sheet. • Each Friday, the homework is due. Exceptions only in case of illness.

  11. BOOK REPORTS • Seven of the book reports are “Standard” book reports from the online form, while two others of them may be “Book Reviews” = 9 Book reports/ school year

  12. INDEPENDENT STUDY PROJECTS • Independent study projects allow students to learn about topics they choose and present their new understanding in a style that is engaging for them and others. • This project is due Monday, May 7, 2012.

  13. ISP Objectives • To become an “expert” on some topic that is appealing to you. • To achieve expertise through a variety of means. • To take that expert knowledge and pass it on in a meaningful and interesting way to the rest of us!

  14. FIELD TRIPS • Parent volunteers at school (including drivers) must have been cleared through the State Patrol Background Check procedure. • If you do not believe you are cleared, log onto my website for the forms to fill out.

  15. Personal and Professional Background • 11thyear of teaching, and my 7thyear in BSD • Undergraduate studies in Bioanthropology and Animal Behavior • Masters in Teaching and another in Special Education

  16. Curriculum This Year:Literacy • Literary Reflections- College of William and Mary. Emphasis on reading while looking through the “Literature Web” Writing Persuasive paragraphs, then essays… • Essay Essentials - Jane Schaffer writing Balancing Concrete facts with Commentary on those facts. • 6-trait Writing – Builds understanding of structure/organization, “flow”, and word choice

  17. The Hamburger Model of writing • The top bun is like a position or thesis (topic+ claim about the topic= thesis). • The reasons are like meat (in this example, there are three layers of meat.) • Elaborations (or details) explain the reasons- they are like “fixings” (ketchup, lettuce, etc.) Too much elaboration (details) can be ineffective. • The conclusion is like the bottom bun; it concludes the paragraph. It mirrors the introduction by restating the thesis.

  18. Science • FOSS Science Kit- 5th grade kit • Mixtures & Solutions (Chemistry) • Environments (Biology- plants) • Landforms (Geology)

  19. Social Studies • Story Path • Northwest Native Cultures • The Oregon Trail. • The Washington Adventure This is the standard 4th grade Curriculum, with Socratic Seminars incorporated and accelerated essay-writing and reading skills. Kids LOVE it!
