  1. This lab will be done in stations. You will have 15 minutes at each station to measure your compound, then the groups will rotate. If you do not finish at your station, you will need to return at lunch or after school to collect the remaining data.

  2. Mole Lab Materials • Beakers • 100 ml graduated cylinders • NaCl • H2O • C12H22O11 • Triple beam balance • Scoopula

  3. Mole Lab Procedure • Use a periodic table to find the molar mass of the following substances: NaCl, H2O & C12H22O11 . (Show work!) • Measure 1 mol of NaCl, 1 mol of H2O & 0.5 mols of C12H22O11 using the following steps for each compound. • Find the mass of the beaker on the balance. Add the calculated mass to the mass of the beaker. This is the actual mass you will be finding.

  4. Mole Lab Set the triple beam balance to that mass. Then add the compound until it balances. Use the graduated cylinder to find the approximate volume in 1 mol of each substance. (You may need to measure several times and add the results).

  5. Data Table

  6. Analysis • Which substance has the greatest molar mass? • Which substance has the greatest volume in 1 mol? • Does the mass of a mole of a substance relate to the substance’s atomic mass? • Does the volume of a mole of a substance relate to the substance’s atomic mass? • Don’t forget the other conclusion questions and the summary! Use full sentences!
