  1. Mountain Biking

  2. What is Mountain Biking? • Mountain biking is a sport which consists of riding bicycles off-road, often over rough terrain, using specially adapted mountain bikes. Mountain bikes share similarities with other bikes, but incorporate features designed to enhance durability and performance in rough terrain.

  3. What is Mountain Biking? • Mountain biking can generally be broken down into multiple categories: cross country (XC), trail riding, all mountain, downhill, freeride, dirt jumping and trials. The vast majority of mountain biking falls into the recreational XC, and Trail Riding categories.

  4. Why I love Mountain Biking! • There are lots of things about Mountain Biking I really love: • I like exploring new places • I enjoy getting outdoors • Mountain Biking is an activity I enjoy doing with my friends • I like working on my bike

  5. Equipment List • You’re going to need to get the following things in order to start biking: • A mountain bike (NORCO is my favorite) • A helmet, and gloves • Bicycle repair tools (chain whip, spoke true, grease, hex wrenches) • A camel-pak is also good when you’re going long distances, otherwise a water bottle is probably fine

  6. Mountain Biking and the Environment • Studies reported in the IMBA (International Mountain Bike Association) Trail Solutions manual found that a mountain bike's impact on a given length of trail surface is comparable to that of a hiker. • The environmental impacts of mountain biking can be greatly reduced by not riding on wet or sensitive trails, not skidding, and by staying on the trail. • Mountain Biking would likely be considered a non-consumptive activity, but only when people stick to the designated trails. • In some cases, people may use a mountain bike as a source of transportation, which is a good alternative to driving.

  7. Why Mountain Biking is awesome!(benefits) • Mountain biking can provide you with adventure • It’s a great way to build muscle, lose weight and stay fit! • Outdoor activities like mountain biking can help to reduce stress, increase self esteem and offer a sense of challenge • It has many economic benefits too…in the US it contributes about $26 billion to the economy each year

  8. Mountain Biking Organizations • There are thousands of mountain biking groups around the world. The biggest one is the International Mountain Biking Association, which is affiliated with over 700 different groups around the world. They have chapters throughout Canada, including in this province.

  9. IMBA Rules of the Trail • IMBA developed "Rules of the Trail" to promote responsible and courteous conduct on shared-use trails. • IMBA Rules of the Trail • Ride On Open Trails Only • Leave No Trace • Control Your Bicycle • Yield to Others • Never Scare Animals • Plan Ahead
