  3. Welcome to Facts about London For almost a century London was the most densely populated city on earth. It was eclipsed by Tokyo in 1925. Before the 17ft statue of Nelson was erected on top of the Trafalgar Square column in 1842, 14 members of the memorial committee who had commissioned the work held a dinner party on the 170ft-high plinth. In the early 1950s anyone could get hold of Prime Minister Winston Churchill – his telephone number was in the phone book. The Fleet River - one of the capital's many buried waterways - still runs under the cellars of the Cheshire Cheese pub on Fleet Street. In 1995 a flock of Starlings landed on the minute hand of the Palace of Westminster Tower clock (Big Ben) and put the time back by five minutes! East London is the most popular film location in the city, playing host to everything from Oliver! to A Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket (filmed at Beckton Gas Works). The naval buildings of Greenwich stood in for Washington in Patriot Games.
