  2. Two Sundays Ago The War Within Romans 7

  3. The Ultimate Question • Romans 7:24-25 • O wretched man that I am! • who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

  4. The Solution • Romans 7:24-25 • I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. The Gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth (Romans 1:18).

  5. Today’s Message The Gospel in One Verse Romans 8:1-4

  6. Please Use a Pew Bible if you didn’t bring a Bible with you. Pg. 834

  7. Romans 8:1-2 • There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. • For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

  8. Romans 8:3-4 • For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: • That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

  9. 2nd Sermon Title Two Great Doctrines in One Verse

  10. Romans 8:1 Chapter 7 reveals Paul’s frustration! • There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, This is the answer to the fact that I am still a sinner.

  11. Verse 1 answers the question why I should NOT fear death in spite of the fact that I know I am still a sinner.

  12. Commentary • Paul’s concern here is pastoral. Paul is telling his readers, in light of the foregoing reminder of their continuing sinfulness they must now recall their acceptance, immunity, and security in Christ. RC Sproul This is the doctrine of justification which split the church in the 16th century.

  13. The Divisions • The Biblical doctrine of justification by faith aloneseparates religions, churches and cults into three camps. • Justified by Faith Alone • Justified by Works • Justified by a Hybrid of Both

  14. “No Condemnation” • What this does NOT mean • It does not mean— • I am without sin • God doesn’t see my sin • My sin doesn’t offend God

  15. “No Condemnation” • What this does NOT mean • It does not mean— • I am without sin • God doesn’t see my sin • My sin doesn’t offend God • I am no longer accountable for my sin

  16. accountability NOT condemnation • 2 Corinthians 5:10 • For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

  17. No Condemnation • “No condemnation” means that at no point in a believer’s life will God find the believer guilty of being a sinner subject to any kind of punishment.

  18. This Does NOT Mean • “No condemnation” does not mean the believer is exempt from the Biblical “you reap what you sow” principle. • Nor does it mean that God ignores my sin from a chastising perspective.

  19. Myth-Buster “No Condemnation” means I do NOT have to confess every sin to be forgiven nor do I have to worry about what if I forgot one.

  20. Justification by Faith Alone Describes the Biblical answer to the question: How can a man be right with God?

  21. Answer • Only by true faith in Jesus Christ • Even though my conscience accuses me of having grievously sinned against all God’s commandments and of never having kept any of them, and even though I am still inclined toward all evil, nevertheless, without my deserving it at all, out of sheer grace, God grants and credits to me

  22. Answer (cont) • The perfect satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ, as if I had never sinned nor been a sinner, as if I had been as perfectly obedient as Christ was obedient for me. • All I need to do is to accept this gift of God with a believing heart. • Zacharias Ursinus (1563)

  23. 2 Corinthians 5:21 • For he [God] hath made him [Christ] to be sin for us, who knew no sin; • that we might be made the righteousness of God in him [Christ]. Why would God do such a thing?

  24. Acts 13:39 • And by him [Christ] all that believe are justified from all things, • from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

  25. Turn to Romans 3:21-26

  26. Turn Back to Romans 8

  27. Romans 8:1 • There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Faith is the way into Christ

  28. “in Christ Jesus” • Who places me in Christ by grace through faith? Answer: The Holy Spirit

  29. Look in Romans 8 Verse 15

  30. Adoption • Adoption gives me all the rights and privileges of a natural born son. • In this case, natural born would be the same as though I were the one who was perfectly obedient to the law. • “In Christ” gives me a whole new family and a whole new life.

  31. Question How do I know if I have been justified and adopted?

  32. Number One • You feel the same way about sin that Paul (and all true Christians) feel about sin and your personal sin problems. • “O wretched man that I am!” says Paul.

  33. Number Two • You believe that your only hope for being declared right with God is your faith in the person, Christ the God-Man, and the work, Jesus’ virgin birth, sinless life, death, burial and resurrection as your personal: • Prophet, Priest and King!

  34. Number Three • Romans 8:1 • There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. • Number Three describes the second great doctrine in this verse and the result of the gospel.

  35. Number Three • People who are saved have not only been saved from the penalty of sin, but they are also being continually delivered from the POWER of sin as they walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

  36. Doctrine • Great Doctrine Number One • Justification • Great Doctrine Number Two • Santification

  37. See the Two in One Verse Justification • There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, Sanctification • who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

  38. Conclusion Romans 8:2-4

  39. The Gift of the Spirit • The gift of the Holy Spirit to all, who believe, is NOT given so that we can ignore the law and live as we see fit. • The gift of the Spirit is given so that those—who have been justified—live like they have been justified in light of what God has done for them through Christ Jesus.
