  2. Etiology of Autism The term or label autistic was first used by psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler in 1911. Autism is under the umbrella of ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). • No single known cause • There is no reliable study that shows the relationship between autism and vaccines. • Likely causes: • Genetics • Environmental factors • Environmental toxins • Heavy metals such as mercury.

  3. The impact of speech/language • CDC (2009) an average of 1 in 110 children in the U.S. has an ASD. • DSM-IV defines one characteristic of autism as severe and pervasive impairment in communication skills, between 35-50% • The communication impairments ranging from mutism, to echolalia, to higher social deficits.

  4. Second language learners • According to Lue, the number of students from diverse cultures is expected to grow to 24 million or 37% of school-age population by the year 2010. • Children and youth with autism now have a “triple-layered” problem. • Misdiagnosis of bilingual students in special education suggests an assessment in both native and English language. • Collaboration between the ESL teacher, general education teacher, and speech-language pathologist is needed.

  5. Communication strategies/resources • No one strategy is recommended. Communication strategies for second language learners • Just like first language learners with autism most strategies can be used for second language learners. • One important difference is to be sensitive to the culture. “Pictures are my first language and words are my second language.” T.
