Presentation purpose Target audience • Service providers working with people with diabetes Aim • To explore the options around diabetes group facilitation Objectives • Provide an overview of the issues in co facilitation • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of co facilitation • Explore the issues for implementation

Co-facilitation of diabetes group education • Two leaders jointly plan and present all sessions of program • May have other specialist presenters but leaders remain with group through these presentations • Leaders work towards developing skills in presenting all areas of the program Other Models • One leader and sessional specialists • Two leaders and guest specialists

Advantages of Co facilitation • Group Participants • Continuity for participants in the program • Opportunity to engage, relationship building and trust with leaders • Opportunity to build on information and interaction weekly and to influence and direct learning consistent with adult learning principles • Greater opportunity to focus on behavior change strategies

  5. Advantages of Co facilitation • Leaders • Broader understanding of all aspects of diabetes care for team members • Skill and knowledge development of team members • These skills can be transferred to 1-1 education • Opportunity to refine and coordinate information presented in the program • Opportunity to provide feedback to each other

  6. Advantages of Co facilitation • Leaders • Opportunity to build on information and interaction weekly sesame street approach • Greater opportunity to focus on behavior change strategies • Manage group dynamics

  7. Disadvantages of Co Facilitation • Time consuming for team members • May be threatening for some leaders

  8. Requirements • Commitment from team members and management • Planning time and agreement on priority areas • Documented program and session plans • Skilled group leaders
