Activate (or provide) Prior Knowledge What is the author’s purpose? The author’s purpose is to persuade. CFU On your whiteboards, write what the author’s purpose is for writing this passage. This passage was written to persuade because this is the author’s opinion. Students, you already know that an author has a purpose for writing. An author also has to decide how to organize an essay. Choosing a purpose, audience, and structural pattern of an essay is called organizational structure.
