  1. Topic What factors lead to negative perceptions of undergraduates towards group work? Group members : Oh Shu Xuan A123581 Sharafuddin A126406 Yu Xuan A122848 Nurul Atiqah Mt. Zin A124331 Hafizah Mohd. Azraai A118978 Helene Loke Xing Lin A123161 Lee Loong Yee A124044 Lee Pei Teng A118692

  2. INTRODUCTION • Group work is defined as small groups of students that work together to maximize each others' learning process (Smith and MacGregor, 1992) • Numerous research conducted has pointed out the benefits of group work (Harvey and Green, 1994).(Boud et al,1999 and Gupta,2004) • However, not all students find the group work experience enjoyable (Coelbeck, Campbell and Bjorklund, 2000; Walker, 2001)

  3. They are three sources of problems in group work, that are motivational, interactional, and logistics difficulties (Boud et al, 1999) • Thus, we are focusing on the factors that contributed to students' negative perception of group work in this study so that we can provide suggestions on how to overcome it.

  4. Justification • Current literature fails to adequately address the factors, from the student perspective, that result in actual or potential problems affecting group work (Liu et al, 2010) • There is cultural mismatch in the form of cooperative and collaborative learning between students in Western countries and Asian countries. (Nyugenet al ,2005) • Investigate if Malaysian students adopting group work face similar problems (motivation difficulties, interaction difficulties and logistical difficulties) as their Western counterparts. • Provides opportunity for students to describe their experiences of peer learning. • Ways to improve peer learning as part of the curriculum can be suggested, which will be useful for lecturers and students alike in future projects.

  5. General Objective To study the factors that cause students’ negative perceptions towards group work in Research Methodology course (NNNA 3073).

  6. Specific Objective To identify the most significant factor (motivation difficulties, interaction difficulties or logistical difficulties) that leads to negative perception towards group work in Research Methodology course (NNNA 3073) among 3rd and 4th year students in JASP.

  7. Hypothesis • H0: There is no significant difference between motivational difficulties, interactional difficulties and logistical difficulties in leading to negative perception towards group work in Research Methodology course (NNNA 3073) among 3rd and 4th year students in JASP. • Ha: There is significant difference between the three factors: motivational difficulties, interactional difficulties and logistical difficulties in Research Methodology course (NNNA 3073) among 3rd and 4th year students in JASP.

  8. Research Question Which is the most significant factor among motivation difficulties, interaction difficulties and logistical difficulties that leads to negative perceptions towards group work in Research Methodology course (NNNA 3073) among students in JASP?

  9. Inclusion criteria Exclusion criteria • Audiology & Speech Sciences year 3 & 4th yr students • Took NNNA3073 Research Methodology during Semester 1 in sessions 2009/2010, 2010/2011 • Participated in research group work under this subject • Students that have not yet taken NNNA3073 Research Methodology (year 1 & 2 of Audiology and Speech Sciences students)

  10. Design study • Survey • Quantitative research Instrument • Questionnaire

  11. Target Population • UKM FSKB Audiology & Speech Sciences year 3 & 4 students

  12. Sampling method • Convenient sampling • The participants are selected, in part or in whole, at the convenience of the researcher

  13. Sampling frame & sample unit • Sampling frame: a list of 3rd year and 4th year JASP students who had undergone Research Methodology course in 2009/2010(4th year),2010/2011(3rd year) • Sample unit: an Audiology or Speech Sciences student who had undergone Research Methodology course in 2009/2010 or 2010/2011

  14. Sample size Formula for selected population n = x2NP(1-P) 2(N-1) + x2P(1-P) = 3.84 (65) 0.5 (1-0.5) 0.052 (65-1) + 3.84 (0.5)(1-0.5) = 55.7 = 56 students n = sample size N = known population (number of 3rd yr+4th JASP students)

  15. FACTORS Conceptual framework Motivational difficulties Interactional difficulties Logistical difficulties • Age • Ethnicity • Gender METHOD: SURVEY GROUP WORK IN RESEARCH METHODOLOGY COURSE CONTEXT 3rd and 4th yr JASP STUDENT’s PERCEPTION SAMPLE Student’s satisfaction level Lecturer motivation NEGATIVE Group work quality and performance Student’s working preference Generalization of perception towards future group work
