  1. Latin GCSE

  2. Why study Latin? • Develops awareness of how languages work • Develops skills valued by universities and employers • Helps with getting to know the terminology of language learning • Encourages logical thinking and problem-solving • Explores the world of the Romans - a key culture and civilisation of 2000 years ago

  3. Why study Latin at a distance? • Very little provision in schools for this valuable subject • Develops independent learning skills • Helps acquisition of self-organisation and self-motivation • Develops ability to manage weekly workload • Contrasts with normal way of studying a subject in school • Working with expert tutor who knows how to make the subject come alive! • Contact available outside of lessons for additional support • Written work marked and returned promptly every week • A maturing experience for the student

  4. Where could Latin take me? • Further study of Latin itself, or other languages and civilisations • Higher Education: Classics, Classical Civilisations, Archaeology, Anthropology, Archives, Museum Studies………. • Researcher for tv/radio/internet programmes about the ancient world • Teacher/lecturer in Classics • Journalism, broadcast media, Civil Service, politics

  5. What the Latin course prepares me for • Latin GCSE in just one year! • Two Language papers (translation and comprehension) • One paper featuring a major poet – Virgil’s Aeneid, Book 12 (extracts) • One paper featuring a great early novelist– Apuleius’ Golden Ass (extract)

  6. How do students succeed ? • Resolve to work hard right from the start • Frequent revision of work recently covered, re-read ‘picture-stories’ and episodes from the textbooks • Learn the new words, every week • Send in weekly written work, to the deadline, by e-mail • Careful preparation of set texts (Virgil, Apuleius) • Take advantage of e-mail contact with tutor – not just the weekly one-hour tutorial • Take pride in all your Latin work – the rewards will come!

  7. Further benefits • Provision of Latin this way benefits the school, not just the student • Enhances school’s curriculum offering • School succeeds in giving students a wide choice of subjects and ways of studying them • School has invested in new technology (video-conferencing equipment) to enhance the learning experience • Tutor provides everything you would expect of a teacher: prompt and helpful marking, reports, parents’ evening • Small group size for personalised learning • Flexible tutor who is contactable outside of school hours
