  1. ATM Autoritat del Transport Metropolità Introduction of e-ticketing in the Metropolitan Region of Barcelona, RMB Main Concepts Meeting of e-ticketing WG, 21st January 2008

  2. Table of contents 1 The context of the contactless technology 2 Reason and opportunity of the project 3 Scope of the project 4 Planning 5 What’s on

  3. 1. The context of the contactless technology (i) • A majority of public transport networks are replacing their magnetic ticketing generation system by a contactless one, through the use of RFID or NFC technology to establish a communication between the card and the validation device. • In the Metropolitan Region of Barcelona, RMB, there has been carried out some pilot experiences and this technology has been specified to be a means of payment, coexisting alongside the magnetic card, in the project of construction of the Line L9 of the Metro.

  4. 1. The context of the contactless technology (ii) • It’s already well known that e-ticketing offers a large number of benefits compared to traditional ways of payment. • Nevertheless: • There’s no effective solution for the single ticket • The security of public transport systems against fraud relies on many components, of which the card is just one, which means that the System as a whole must be highly resistant to tampering such as, for instance, reverse engineering attacks, fault/glitch attacks, or power analysis attacks • All systems and management processes, marketing and use of the variety of tickets, as well as revenue and clearing mechanisms are to be modified in a lenghty transit that normally includes some interlude

  5. 2. Reason and opportunity of the project • Limitation of the actual magnetic system • Obsolescence of existing equipment • By 2010 most of devices reach life cycle • Sociopolitical context • 2012 is the year-objective for the implementation of an integration fare system in the whole territory of Catalonia. • Efficiency and sustainability of the public transport system • Image • Other (integration of citizen services, introduction of EMV, ..)

  6. 3. Scope of the project To maintain and to promote the success of the Integrated fare System • Specific solution for the public transport network • Migration or updating of the technology ONLY, not the actual fare system • Technologyfully owned and produced by ATM, not conditioned by other non-transport entities. • Complete adaptation of the Metropolitan Region of Barcelona, in phases • Interoperability (all standards at all levels)

  7. Planning Common Project Development (DPC) PROYECTO Specific projects Introduction of e-ticket Phase 1 introduction to Crown 1 IMPLANTACIÓN Phase 2 Gradual adaptation to the rest of crowns 4. Phases of the project (i) • The main goal is to have a common application that defines the data to be contained in the card and all devices, alongside with all the processes that interact with or modify them (creation, personalization, sale, recharging, inspection, backoffice processes) associated to a high security scheme of the system.

  8. Responsibility of ATM to design and maintain. • Development of the image of the new system. • Functional analysis of the system. • Selection of technologies. • Development of the transport application. • Specification of new data collection and exchange protocols. • Common specification of equipment and devices. • Validating tests of the software application and • All elements at all levels must comply to all defined standards (mechanical, electronical, operational, data elements, data structures,..) 4. Phases of the project (ii) Planning Common Project Development (DPC) PROYECTO Specific projects Introduction of e-ticket Phase 1 Introduction to Crown 1 IMPLANTACIÓN Phase 2 Gradual adaptation to the rest of crowns

  9. 4. Phases of the project (iii)

  10. 4. Phases of the project (iv)

  11. 5. What’s on • Establishment of the frame of funding of the project. • Consolidate the organisationneeded to carry out the project. • Kick off the development of the common project is due the end of January 2008.
