  1. Welcome Parents, Students, Wilson Teachers and Staff School Improvement Summit Woodrow Wilson High School Saturday, April 28, 2012 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Agenda Outcome Outcomes: By the end of this retreat, participants will have: • Heard a key note message and understood the charge of the summit • Heard the goals and targets for the 2012-2013 school year • Learned and will be able to apply the School Improvement Plan Model (Plan, Do, Study, Act) • Learned about and understand how to use “Quality Tools” • Understood the definition of mission and vision statements and participated in an activity to develop a personal and group mission statement for this summit • Heard a description of each of the identified school improvement areas which were created by using feedback for all stakeholders • Formed small groups and completed a force field analysis of a topic and began creating an action plan to address the topic • Heard a report from each small group as to the work that they completed during the small group breakout session

Ground Rules • Honor time limits • Be respectful of those speaking (no side bar conversations or doing other work) • Comments should advance the discussion by presenting new ideas (repetition should be avoided) • Practice digital etiquette. Laptop use is restricted to presentation use or official note taking. Put cell phones on vibrate. (Use professional judgment when answering a phone and step outside of the room to do so.) • Raise your hand/gesture before speaking & acknowledge who has gestured to speak in a equitable manner

  5. Ground Rules (contd) • Different opinions are welcome. • Challenge ideas, not individual. • All participants share responsibility for the team’s process. Silence means agreement. • Disagree in private; unite in public. Irrespective of how individuals voted, once a decision has been agreed to everyone should support it and speak with one voice outside of the meeting. • Do what you say you’ll do. Individuals are accountable for following through on agreed actions and the group should hold each other mutually accountable. • Roles will be defined for the meeting • Keep all the discussions Private & decisions Public

Goals for 2012-2013 • Math–62% scoring proficient or better • Reading–73% scoring proficient or better • Class Performance–69% earning a 2.0 or better per advisory • Honor Roll–36% earning honor roll status per advisory • SAT–Increase the average score by 23 points (1,010) in verbal and math • Advanced Placement (Participation)–36% of scholars in the 11th and 12th grade enrolled in an advanced placement course • Advanced Placement (Performance)-46% of scholars will earn a 3 or better on the Advanced Placement test • Graduation–77% graduation rate • Attendance (ADA)–94% average daily attendance (ADA) rate for all scholars • Attendance (ISA)–92% in seat attendance (ISA) rate for all scholars • Suspensions–Reduce behaviors resulting in suspension by 20% or more (290) • Climate (Scholar)-75% of our scholars will indicate that they feel safe in our school on the annual climate survey • Climate (Parent)-78% of our parents will indicate that they would recommend that a friend send his or her child to our school on the annual climate survey • Climate (Staff)-84% of our staff will indicate that this school is a good place to work on the annual climate survey

GOAL #1: Wilson High School will provide rigorous instruction in all classrooms aligned to the DCPS/Common Core State Standards. • Class Performance – 69% of scholars earning a 2.0 or better per advisory • Honor Roll – 36% of scholars earning honor roll status per advisory • Rigorous instruction • Expanding Honors/Advanced Placement enrollment • Raising instruction in ALL levels of classes • Consistent rigor in courses • Classroom supports and intervention strategies • Supports and interventions outside of regularly scheduled classroom instruction • Grading systems – teacher/department/school consistency • EdLine or other grading systems? • Frequency of updating grade status • How will updated grade information be communicated to scholars/parents

GOAL #2: Wilson High School will meet its performance goals in testing. • Advanced Placement Testing • Advanced Placement Performance – 46% of scholars will earn a “3” or better on AP tests • Advanced Placement Participation – 36% of scholars in the 11th and 12th grade will be enrolled in at least ONE advanced placement course • DCCAS • Reading – 73% of the cohort will score Proficient or Better • Math – 62% of the cohort will score Proficient or better • Scholastic Aptitude Testing • SAT Performance – Increase the average score (both verbal and math) by 23 points (1,010)

GOAL #3: Teachers at Wilson High School will communicate scholar’s academic progress regularly and consistently to scholars, parents and school Student Support Teams. • Frequency of updating grade status • EdLine or what? Levels of Decision Making • D1 Decisions – Decisions that are made in isolation without any feedback or information • Administrative Roles and Responsibilities • Personnel/Disciplinary Action • D2 Decisions – Decisions that are made through seeking feedback and the person or group identified as the primary owner of the decision/action makes takes action based on the feedback • Personnel/Hiring • D3 Decisions – Decisions that are made through collaboration and consensus is the goal. School Improvement Summit Small Group Action Planning Saturday, April 28, 2012 12:30-3:30 Outcomes: By the end of this retreat, participants will have: • Presented their personal mission statement for the summit • Defined the topic/issue and created a goal/objective • Analyzed the available data and identified root causes • Completed a “Force Field Analysis” of the topic/issue • Created an action plan in order to address the preventers and drivers of the topic/issue in order to meet the goal
