  9. RRTN Mission Statement What is RRTN? What does RRTN hope to accomplish? How does RRTN hope to accomplish this?

  10. RRTN Mission The Robert Robinson Taylor Network (RRTN), named after the first black graduate of MIT (1892), is a 501(c)3 non-profit educational foundation comprised of a global network of partners connecting youth and professionals to a cultural legacy of achievement in architecture, science, technology, engineering and math (ASTEM). The goal is to create cultural and economic impact through innovation, invention and entrepreneurship. RRTN's mission is to increase the number of underrepresented populations in architecture, science, technology, and engineering fields, while specifically increasing the number of technology entrepreneurs and companies founded by these individuals.

  11. RRTN’s History Who was Robert R. Taylor? Why is he important? How are we preserving his legacy?

  12. Robert R. Taylor • [insert slide from 2009 presentation on Robert Taylor]

  13. RRTN Timeline • [ Get timeline from Debby]

  14. Market Research The need

  15. Societal Problems • Large drop-out rate of minority students in high school • Not enough minorities in college and advanced programs • Not enough women & minorities in leadership positions in ASTEM fields • Not enough minorities starting successful technology-based companies

  16. Black Youth Dropout Rates • Dropoutrate for African American females is 41 %, but for African American males it's 53 % • Each year, more than half of the 1.2 million students who fail to graduate from high school are Black and Latino • 58 % of all Black fourth graders in the nation are functionally illiterate; 85 % are reading below grade level • A Black boy born in 2001 has a 33 % chance of going to prison in his lifetime • A million Black males are in prison; Nearly two and a half million Black children have an incarcerated parent • Murder is the number one cause of death among young black men

  17. Students Enrolled in Degree-Seeking Institutions, By Race

  18. Black Professional Trends, By Race

  19. Black-Owned Firms, By Industry-Type •  From 2002 to 2007, the number of black-owned businesses` increased by 60.5% to 1.9 million, more than triple the national rate of 18.0% • Over the same period, receipts generated by black-owned businesses increased 55.1% to $137.5 billion

  20. RRTN Solution

  21. RRTN Programs • 5 Program Areas • Leadership • Archive • Institute • Ventures • Network • Core Programs • ADIAS – Digital media publication on black contributions to ASTEM • Digital Newsroom – Media publishing project to advocate black culture in science and technology • XStudio – Summer/academic year internship program in innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology • XStudio-in-a-Box – A distributed network of innovation labs, developed around an open source hybrid bundle of powerful computing cloud services and on-site hardware and software to replicate the XStudio experience in Africa, the Caribbean, and the US, especially in underserved and technology poor communities • XLabs- Virtual & hands-on science & engineering labs by and for high school students • Open Course Exchange – A market place of courses related to ASTEM, entrepreneurship, and black cultural history in sciences • Venture Startups – Working with startup technology enterprises

  22. XStudio (Extreme Studio) What is XStudio? How does it engage youth and immerse them in a professional setting? Leadership Archive Institute Ventures Networking

  23. XStudio at MIT

  24. XStudio Mission (shorten) An intensive, “learn-by-doing”, R&D educational program for youth with professionals engaged in the end-to-end process of innovation, invention and entrepreneurship. The program immerses students in the professional world from the perspective of executives and the start-up experience of a technology-oriented business. Students learn the “business of science and technology” from a practical, hands-on experience where they are given real-world problems to solve with the expectation of delivery of a real-world solution. Students grow rapidly in their communication, business, technical, and professional skills as well as conduct and confidence. Students walk away with a portfolio of accomplished and delivered products to the real world and to executives, faculty, peers, and business partners from around the world. Students are well-positioned for advancement in their own personal academic and pre-professional pursuits as well as stronger resumes for application to college, scholarships, and other intense internships.

  25. XStudio2012 Projects ADIAS Cultural Heritage Archive and Travelling Exhibit This project aims to build an invaluable and accessible online and offline resource / repository, archive, library, museum and educational media productions based on the lives, workings and research, by and about blacks in the ASTEM fields. This includes a multimedia travelling exhibit and related products for sale. ADIAS Technology Platform Working with institutions like IBM, Lenovo, and Brainshark, to develop a world class open source communications and social networking platform with content connecting distributed innovation labs (XStudios) in Africa, the Caribbean, and the USA. Digital Newsroom and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Working with journalists and technologists to develop and implement a digital newsroom to document and advocate black culture in science and technology. This includes websites, TV and radio shows, social media platforms, and RSS Feeds. Students are learning how to use applications such as Constant Contact, Word Press, MediaWiki, IBM SmartCloud, IBM Mashup, and RSS feeds. CRM is a project of RRTN's Digital Newsroom. The purpose is to centralize all contacts of RRTN into a single master contact database using MySQL, a desktop application, and cloud services. The goal is to integrate contact information from at least 15 locations such as personal business cards, distribution lists (such as MIT LISTSERV), DYMO Cardscan, ScanBizCards.com, Gmail, Constant Contact, Intuit QuickBooks Online, IBM SmartCloud (formerly LotusLive), ADIAS Dipity Timelines, Microsoft Excel, Social Communities (Caribbean Access, Facebook, LinkedIn, RRTN.net, and Twitter) and mobile devices. This project includes writing APIs and scripts; and creating an open-source database. The goal is to manage currently 3,000+ contacts with an annually growth rate of 19%.

  26. XStudio2012 Projects Open Course Exchange A unique virtual marketplace of multimedia courses related to ASTEM, entrepreneurship, and black cultural history, created by youth, educators, and professionals from around the world. RRTN is partnering with Apple, Brainshark, IBM Lotus, MIT and Socrato to create the platform on which these courses will be delivered. Resource Development and Finance Creating executive presentations, proposals, grants, and financial reports for Board of Directors, Executive Leadership, and sponsors. Cultivating new sponsors. Technology Venture Start-ups Working with new venture start-ups to develop and design new technology- oriented businesses, products, and services, includes business plan development, prototyping, partner relations, and market research. X Labs This is RRTN-initiated virtual hands-on science and engineering-based labs around the world. With the MIT Center for Educational Computing Initiatives‘ (CECI) iLabs program, XLabs will allow high-school and college students to generate optics and holography-based labs at universities and high schools around the world. The concept of having students leading the design and construction of the labs is applied as a way to allow them to experience ASTEM (architecture, science, technology, engineering and math) through a “learn by doing” model. XStudio-in-a-Box A distributed network of innovation labs, developed around an open source hybrid bundle of powerful computing cloud services and on-site hardware and software to replicate the XStudio experience in Africa, the Caribbean, and the US, especially in underserved and technology poor communities
