  2. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) What Civil Engineers Do

  3. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) What Civil Engineers Do

  4. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) What Civil Engineers Do

  5. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) What Civil Engineers Do

  6. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) What Civil Engineers Do

  7. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) One Focus Within Civil Engineering: Earthquake Engineering! Definition: Earthquake engineering deals with the effects of earthquakes on people and their environment and the methods of reducing those effects.

  8. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) A Brief History Lesson • Earthquake engineering is a new field (40-50 years old) • During 1960’s we were able to locate EQ locations accurately • The oldest written record of earthquakes date back 3000 years • to China • Japan: 1600 years • US: 350 years (California 200 years) • Humans have experienced earthquakes for MILLIONS of years • and only within the last 40-50 years are modern countries able • to deal with them

  9. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Understanding Earthquakes We first need to understand the EARTH: 225 million years ago 200 million years ago 135 million years ago 25 miles deep 65 million years ago Present Day

  10. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Understanding Earthquakes We first need to understand the EARTH: Why does the crust move? COLD!!! HOT!!! 25 miles deep

  11. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Tectonic Plates = “Pieces of the crust” 6 Continental Plates (14 sub-continental plates) Eurasia Plate America Plate Pacific Plate Africa Plate Australia Plate Antarctic Plate Earthquake Locations

  12. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Structural Damage Causes Most Death 1906 San Francisco Earthquake

  13. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Landslides

  14. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Tsunami 220,000 dead or missing

  15. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Developing Countries Loss of homes, electricity, water 2005 Pakistan Earthquake

  16. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) We still have a lot of work to do… Pakistan, 2005 Loma Prieta, US 1989

  17. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Earthquakes World-wide

  18. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Today…..United States

  19. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) We try to reduce earthquake damage by… …Understanding exactly what happens during earthquakes …Using principles of math and physics to figure out how the shaking affects their buildings and bridges …Using intuition, reasoning, and their math and physics skills to design better, earthquake resistant buildings

  20. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Build models to mimic real buildings

  21. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Use engineering judgment along with computer models and experiments to decide what the best way to deal with the problem is Structure Bearings or isolators

  22. Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Thank you! Questions?
