  2. Definition • No one definition. “several shapes and directions” • Focuses on gender equality • Feminist critics think that literature is written by males and looked at through a masculine lens.

  3. “To read with heightened awareness of the nature, social roles, and treatment of female characters” • Feminist critics consider how females are portrayed in a work and how the females in a work have been understood by audiences

  4. Background • Modern feminist movement began in 1960’s • Before women were thought as ‘inferior creatures’ and ‘lesser beings’ • Closely related to the feminist movement (Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton) • In a patriarchal society, womens talents and products are undervalued

  5. Mary Wollstonecraft • 1759 – 1797 • Author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman 1792 • Wrote that women should take action and make men notice that women had equal abilities

  6. “If women be educated for dependence; that is, to act according to the will of another fallible being, and submit, right or wrong, to power, where are we to stop?” -Mary Wollstonecraft

  7. Elaine Showalter • 1941- • A Literature of Their Own in1977 • Divided feminist criticism into three phases: • The Feminine Phase (1840-80) • The Feminist Phase (1880-1920) • The Female Phase (1920-present)

  8. Questions to Consider • Where do you find an imbalance of power among the characters? • How do the male characters view the female characters in the text? How do the female characters veiw themselves? • Do the female characters conform to the expected norms?
