  4. Catholic Morality • Refers to the way we lead our lives in response to God’s law of love in our souls. • The Church gives us a set of norms to help us answer the question: • “What should I do?”

  7. Human Dignity The respect owed to all human beings because they are all created in the image and likeness of God.

  9. Grace • Our participation in God’s life • The help God gives us to live out our vocation • A gift of the Holy Spirit • Moves us towards God and away from sin • Helps us accept forgiveness

  10. Grace • Renews us internally and helps us to grow spiritually • A pure gift, nothing we can do to earn it • Gives us the capacity to engage in the moral life • Whenever we do good, it is the grace of the Holy Spirit working within us

  12. Sanctifying Grace • A habitual grace • God is constantly present with us • Sharing in God’s life • Enables us to live with him in friendship

  13. Actual Grace • The help God gives us for a particular need • An important decision • A time of loss or grief • A time of crisis

  14. Comfort/Challenge • Living the Christian Moral life is both a comfort and a challenge. It is a comfortbecause we can all appreciate the grace that God gives us. To know that we are loved and forgiven and accepted for who we are. It is also a challengebecause grace requires us to be courageous and change certain behaviors that we are comfortable with but that are morally contrary to the Christian message of the Gospels.

  15. Cheap Grace • Denotes a relationship with God that we take for granted • God loves us no matter what, so it doesn’t matter what we do • It’s a one-way love relationship. God loves us but we don’t show we love Him

  16. Costly Grace • Denotes a relationship with God that involves a response on our part • It is a two-way love relationship • We experience God’s love so deeply that we are moved to love others in return • It’s costly because it requires a certain sacrifice from us

  18. Vocation • The way we live out our vocation varies from person to person, but everyone’s vocation is tom know, love and serve God • Our vocation is to make something beautiful out of the talents that God has given us • To be co-workers with God in the continuing story of creation

Morality: An Art and a Science • Assignment: List as many examples as possible of the following: • Elements in our society that contribute positively to a sense of morality • Elements in our culture that do not • Examples of popular music that contribute positively • Television shows • Movies • Books

  21. Morality: An Art and a Science • The scienceof morality refers to thoughtfully determining what is right • The art morality refers to practical reasoning, having the ability to see things through and do what is right

  22. The Science of Morality • As a Science, moral decision-making requires a systematic thought and analysis. • Critical Thinking : Examining with an open mind what we normally take for granted

  23. The Science of Morality • As a science moral-decision making means employing our thinking and reasoning capacity in the decisions we make. Being attentive to the world around us, seeking out knowledge and understanding. • Critical thinking involves a thoughtful evaluation of both the positive and the negative dimensions of our culture.

  24. The Art of Morality • Morality as an Art suggests that we become creative and imaginative in our moral thinking. • A practical dimension

  25. The Art of Morality • Matthew 25: 14-27 • Talent : In Jesus’ time a unit of money; In current times it designates a natural endowment (gift) with which we are born • The talents we have been given are to be used to help carry on God’s work of creation. • We are co-creators with God.
