Some informations about Ireland • The name 'Ireland' derives from the name Eriu (in modern Irish, Éire) with the addition of the Germanic word 'land‘. . • Politically it is divided into the Republic of Ireland, a sovereign state occupying five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom, occupying the northeastern sixth of the island.

In the Republic of Ireland, Roman Catholicism is the most important religion • The population of the island is slightly under six million (2006), with 4,239,848 in the Republic of Ireland and about 1.7 million in Northern Ireland. • Ireland became part of the European Union in 1973 so the currency is the Euro.

  5. The history of Dublin • Founded as a centre of Viking settlement, the city has been Ireland's capital since mediaeval times. The settlement 'Dubh Linn' dates perhaps as far back as the first century BC and later a monastery was built there. • After the Norman invasion of Ireland, Dublin became Ireland's capital. • The Easter Rising of 1916 left the capital in an unstable situation and the Anglo-Irish War and Irish Civil War left it in ruins.
