  1. The “NUTS & BOLTS” of Building A Sewer & Water GIS Presented by: John R. Woodard, MS GIS Specialist Chagrin Valley Engineering, Ltd. www.cvelimited.com

  2. Software People Data Procedures Hardware from ESRI

  3. FACTORS TO CONSIDER • Cost • Design • Information • Support

  4. GIS NUTS & BOLTS $$$$$$$$$$$$ What is the expected “Return on Investment (ROI)?” • Software Data/Information • Manpower/Labor • Hardware

  5. DATA/INFORMATION • Source • Accuracy • Cost

  6. THE PEOPLE • Who will be in charge? • Who will use it? • Who will update it? • Who will collect, input, or access the data?

  7. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS • Infrastructure • Hardware • Software • Maintenance • Personnel • Upgrades • Where will the system reside?

  8. SYSTEM DESIGN • Who will use it? • How will it be used? • What is the purpose? • Custom or Out-of-the-box system (or hybrid) • Future expectations (expandability)

  9. Strongsville The City of Strongsville decided to develop a sewer and water GIS system. This system will then be expanded and shared with all city departments. Chagrin Valley Engineering, Ltd (CVE) was awarded the contract to design, build, and install, the GIS system.

  10. DATA/INFORMATION • Where will we get the information for the sewer & water systems? • Plan sheets that are kept in a digital image library. • The library was created using a program named Laserfiche. • Good system for retrieving and viewing the plan sheets. • Lacks an indexing system for a “back-end” connection to GIS.

  11. PLAN SETS & SHEETS

  12. THE LASERFICHE DIRECTORY

  13. THE INVENTORY • Created a CDI or document inventory number • The laserfiche library was sorted and categorized by: • Title, Plan/Profile, Details, Notes/Specs or Misc.

  14. THE FINAL INVENTORY

  15. GETTING THE DATA INTO THE GIS…

  16. A TWO STEP PROCESS GEO-REFERENCING A plan sheet TIF is selected and cropped to an “Area of Interest”. The cropped image is imported into ArcGIS & Geo-referenced to the parcel layer.

  17. A TWO STEP PROCESS THE INFORMATION IS DIGITIZED

  18. A LOOK AT THE ATTRIBUTE TABLE

  19. THE GEO-DATABASE

  20. COMMON MISTAKES • Typos In Numerical Data • Different Abbreviations • Misspellings

  21. GEO-DATABASE DOMAINS

  22. USING & SHARINGTHE SYSTEM’S INFORMATION

  23. A “SNEAK PEAK” OF THE GIS

  24. USING ARCREADER TO DISTRIBUTE THE GIS TO DEPARTMENTS/USERS. DEPT A & USER 1 ARCREADER MAP DEPT B & USER 2 DEPT C & USER 3
