  2. Real Life Stories Jesse, 10, cleans his teeth so frequently that he uses a box of toothpicks each week and his gums bleed profusely. Each day he uses a half box of Q-tips to clean his ears and a roll of toilet paper when he goes to the toilet. When he does his homework, Jesse can spend an hour on the same page, erasing and rewriting words because he's sure he didn't get them right.

  3. Definition OCD It is characterized by distressing intrusive obsessive thoughts and/or repetitive compulsive actions (which may be physical or mental acts) that are clinically significant. Symptoms: perform compulsive rituals (frequently performed tasks to get rid of obsessive thoughts) obsessive thoughts

  5. Theories on the Development of the Disorder • Biological theory - normal levels of Serotonin (regulates anxiety) and Dopamine (reward) • Psychoanalytic theory – obsessions and compulsions reflect maladaptive responses to unresolved conflicts from early stages of psychological development

  6. Treatment Options • Medication: Celexa, Proza, Luvox, Paxil, Zoloft, Clomipramine (selective Seratonin reuptake inhibitors) • Behavior therapy, Psychodynamic therapy, Cognitive Behavior therapy, Electroconvulsive therapy • Psychosurgery

  7. Facts • 20% of people who have OCD have tics (uncontrollable urges to move) • Twin studies have supported strong heritability for OCD, with a genetic influence of 45-65% in studies in children and 27-47% in adults • 4th most common mental disorder • OCD can start from a strep throat infection
