  1. Tectonic Plates Mrs. Hartman

  2. Tectonic Plates • Definition: Pieces of the lithosphere that move around on top of the asthenosphere • (think of the lithosphere like a giant jigsaw puzzle)

  3. Popcorn read page 396-397 and look at figure 4

  4. Tectonic Ice Cubes demo

  5. Popcorn read page 398

  6. Continental Drift • The hypothesis that states that the continents once formed a single landmass, broke up and drifted to their present locations. • This is Alfred Wegner’s theory (he was the scientist who thought of it)

  7. See page 401 figure 2 • Continents started out as Pangaea (all stuck together) • Pangaea Laurasia and Gondwanapresent day continents

  8. Plate Boundary • A place where tectonic plates touch • 3 types: • Convergent • Divergent • Transform

  9. convergent • Boundary formed by the collision of 2 plates • (plates are running into each other) • Hand signal 

  10. divergent • Boundary formed with 2 tectonic plates are moving away from each other • Plates are pulling apart • Hand signal  

  11. transform • Boundary formed when tectonic plates plates are sliding past each other horizontally. • Plates are sliding past each other • Hand signal  

  12. Assignment: • Use the map to label the types of boundaries at each number and color each plate.
