  2. In this lesson, we will focus on another way to spell a long vowel sound. • Say these words: he, she, we, go, no • These are are…long vowel sounds • Do you hear a consonant sound AFTER the vowel sound? • NO. There is no consonant AFTER the vowel. These words have an OPEN syllable pattern.

  3. Say this word: robot How many syllables do you hear? (Two) What is the first syllable? (Ro) Do you hear a consonant sound after the long vowel sound IN THATsyllable? (No) Words with two or more syllables can also have an OPEN syllable pattern.

  4. Accent (or stress) is when we say a word or part of a word a little bit louder, hold the sound out a little bit longer, and our mouths open a little bit wider. Say these words: robot, spider, music Which syllables get the accent? The 1st syllable of each word is accented. ACCENT or STRESS

  5. When you hear a LONG vowel sound in an OPEN accented (stressed) syllable, spell the vowel with that letter: A E I O U • Examples: • o/pen to/talspi/der mu/sic cra/zy • All of these words have an open accented FIRST syllable! Spelling begins with the sounds you hear.

  6. Contractions are two words shortened to be just one word. • We leave out a letter or letters to change the two words into one word. • We use an apostrophe to show the missing letter(s). • Was + not = wasn’t Can + not = can’t She + will = she’ll He + will = he’ll CONTRACTIONS
