  2. Historical Background • “A people, really oppressed to a great degree by their sovereign, cannot well be insensible when they are so oppressed. And such a people (if I may allude to an ancient fable) have, like the hesperian fruit, a DRAGON for their protector and guardian” -Jonathan Mayhew

  3. Main Idea • The phrase was used more particularly often by colonists in America as an expression of their grievances towards British taxes.

  4. Point Of View • Colonists believed they lacked representation and involvement in certain government decisions, in this case being tax impositions.

  5. Inferences • The tone portrayed expresses the lack of toleration by colonists towards the taxes • Somewhat foreshadows some kind of rebellious action • Influential towards Revolutionary aspiration
