  2. Persephone’s Story • One day when Persephone was picking flowers, Hades snatched her up and dragged her back to the Underworld with him. After Demeter, Persephone’s mother, spent a year refusing to work, Zeus told Hades he had to return Persephone to Demeter. Before she left the Underworld, Hades gave her a pomegranate to eat. Because she ate six seeds of the pomegranate, she was doomed to spend six of the twelve months every year in the Underworld with Hades. During that time, Demeter mourns Persephone’s absence, taking a break from work. This is how the Greeks explained the seasons. Persephone is with Demeter during spring and summer, and she is with Hades during fall and winter.

  3. Persephone’s Qualities A youthful quality Adaptable

  4. Persephone was worshiped in two ways: • The Maiden or “Kore” (means young girl) • This represents the young and innocent side of Persephone. Also how vulnerable she was when Hades kidnapped her. • The Goddess of the Underworld • This represents the mature woman who reigns over souls.

  5. Role On Mt. Olympus • Persephone did not have a specific role on Mt. Olympus, but she was Demeter’s daughter. Demeter was the goddess of agriculture.

  6. How Persephone Affected the Way the Greeks Viewed the World • The Greeks used Persephone’s story to explain the seasons. Spring and summer occur when Persephone is reunited with her mom, Demeter. Winter and Fall are cold and brutal because Persephone is forced to live in the Underworld with Hades during this time.

  7. How Persephone is apart of Modern Culture • Some people name their children Persephone, after the Greek Goddess. • There is a business in Soddy Daisy, TN called Persephone’s Creations. It is a custom embroidery and quilting shop.

  8. The Matrix Reloaded • One of the main characters in the movie The Matrix Reloaded is named Persephone after the Greek Goddess. • In the movie it alludes to Merovingian, Persephone’s husband, being like Hades, god of the underworld.
