  2. Undifferentiated Schizophrenia is the term used when a person is showing symptoms which meet many of schizophrenia, but does not fully or clearly fit one of the other types of schizophrenia disorders. (paranoid, catatonic, disorganized) Undifferentiated schizophrenia is just another subtype of schizophrenia itself.

  3. Examples • Gloria’s story: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPaKLD6dT28 http://www.schizophrenia.com/family/perstory5.htm • The above link is a website of individual’s stories and the symptoms that were first noticed before being diagnosed with Schizophrenia.

  4. Living with Schizophrenia Those living with Schizohave difficulty discerning between reality and fantasy. Most tend to hallucinate and withdrawal from social interactions. They are likely to have schizophrenic episodes that can cause them to harm themselves or others.Schizophrenic people tend to be more likely to attempt suicide. Many schizophrenics are able to live fairly independent lives depending on the severity of their symptoms. With medication, schizophrenics are able to have some control over their disorders. Stats: 28% live independently 20% live in group homes 25% live with family members 27% homeless, jails/prisons, hospitals/nursing homes

  6. Causes There is no sole cause for schizophrenia. It is said to be a chemical imbalance in the brain that causes messages in the brain to get mixed up. This results from a combination of genetics and environmental factors. You are more likely to develop schizophrenia if your parents had it.

Diagnostic In order to be diagnosed with Undifferentiated Schizophrenia the patient must suffer from 2 or more of the following symptoms: • Delusions • Hallucinations • Disorganized speech • Extremely disorganized or cationic behavior • “Negative” symptoms ***Symptoms must be present for at least one full month.

  8. Treatment There is no cure for schizophrenia. The goal is to control symptoms. Antipsychotic medication effectively control symptoms in about 80% of those with schizophrenia. Other methods of treatment are: • Mental health counseling • Psychosocial therapy • Antipsychotic medications • Electroconvulsive therapy • Shock therapy

  9. Statistics • symptoms tend to occur in men sooner than in women • Affects men and women at an equal percentage • 2.7 million Americans are diagnosed per year • 24 million people world wide • Present in all ethnic groups
