  2. Panel Purpose • Discuss the current state of the park and recreation profession and their professionalism needs • Encourage thought, discussion, investigation, and action to move us forward

What are the Institutions of a Profession? • Monopoly over practice • Common set of attitudes about the nature and value of our work • Acquisition and dissemination of knowledge • Measure of autonomy and self-governance • A professional identity that sets the profession apart from other occupations • A code of ethics that expresses the professional’s obligations to clients and the public • Long-term commitments to the field that commitment is a vocation, a sense of calling.

Questions • Improve the fact we are an “indispensable” service… • Read the park & recreation journals thoroughly? • Support: “no other profession is actually more vital to society than ours”? • Believe that our profession is essential for society? • Advocate the importance of our profession? • Embrace that no other occupation is more important to society than ours? • If ever an occupation were indispensable, it is mine.

  9. Questions • How to Improve the autonomy of our professionals • Professionals allowed to make Minor Decisions? • Professionals allowed to make Major Decisions?

Questions • How to move forward with Credentialing? • Improve the common body of knowledge similar to that possessed by other professions in which licensing or certification of professionals is required? • Move forward credentialing as a requirement to practice? • Assure Professional certifications (CPRP, CPRE, CPSI, AFO) perform their jobs or tasks? • Develop education & offered through colleges and universities? • Require degrees for entry level positions in park and recreation?
