  1. EU-Canada Future Internet Workshop 2011 PII – Pan European Laboratory Canada-EU partnership within FIRE Prof. Mohamed Cheriet, Eng. Ph.D. Director, Synchromedia Consortium École de technologiesupérieure, Montreal (Quebec), Canada PI, Canadian Innovation Cluster On behalf of Panlab team

  2. PII – Pan-European Laboratory Infrastructure Implementation Satellite Clusters Scope PII, a large FP7 IP, addresses the need for large-scale testing facilities in the telecoms area by implementing an infrastructure for federating testbeds. Sweden Ireland Core Innovation Clusters Berlin Germany OuluFinland Objective Create an European testbed federation among regional innovation clusters. Participants can test new telecoms services and applications across Europe. Canada Patras Greece BretagneFrance Spain Italy Innovation Clusters PII builds on the European innovation clusters and federates their existing testbeds. It includes four core and five satellite innovation clusters. Technical Approach Implement the infrastructure for interconnecting testbeds. Develop the mechanisms for offering testing services. Deploy a web-based discovery and control tool (Teagle) Target Users All stakeholders in the telecoms value chain. Beneficiaries include SMEs, large corporations, universities, and end-users.

  3. Architecture and Tools Panlab Testbed Manager (PTM) : carry out Management operations such as configuration and component (RA) interconnectivity. Resource adaptor (RA) : Abstracts management capabilities of various applications / devices. Interconnection Gateways (IGW): Interconnect federation testbeds and components inside a testbed with the peers that are part of the configuration Panlab office: realises a brokering service by coordinating the provisioning of the infrastructure and the interconnectivity between the partner test-sites and the customer. Teagle: web-based interface that allows browsing through the federation’s offerings, enables the definition of Virtual Costumer Testbeds (VCT) and executes the provisioning.

  5. Use cases • List of use cases • IMS based testing - clients, application and access technologies (Cosmote) • Telco Core Networks and Clouds – A Load Scenario (Fokus) • Cloud Transcoding scenario (Canadian Innovation Cluster) • VideoLan Multicast streaming scenario (Canadian Innovation Cluster) • Uncompressed HD live streaming scenario (Canadian Innovation Cluster) • Federated clouds (IMS, S-CSCF, P-CSCF) (Canadian Innovation Cluster / Fokus) • Testing solution for the real time evaluation of Power Line Communications transmission (Orange) • Real-Time Industrial Networking Infrastructure as testing environment (ISI) • Streaming scenario with Video- and Web-TV- Server with different clients (e.g. WinCE) (MN, Thomson) • Presence application based on Service Delivery Platform (TID) • Meta Cloud algorithm testing - Testing Admission Control Mechanisms (UoP) • Evaluation platform for network components (DT)

  6. Canadian participation • Canadian Innovation Cluster • Synchromedia, Inocybe Technologies Inc. and Communication Research Centre Canada • Funded by MDEIE (Ministry of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade (Quebec) ) • Objectives • Provide a next generation testbed of cloud computing and networking tools and services. • Integrate resources from other participating testbeds such as Phosphorus, FEDERICA HPDMnet and GreenStar Network to Panlab. • Implementation • Canadian PTM, Resource Adapters • Bridging PII and IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) resource models • Tests and experimentations • Dynamic Network Services • Cloud Computing and Networking • High Performance Media Streaming • Green infrastructure services 6

  7. PII- HPDMnet integration • Control a part of HPDMnet resources from PII , 2 use cases : • High Performance Media Streaming (VideoLan, UltraGrid) • Dynamic Network Services (Chronos) 7

  8. Green Star Network – Panlab integration • GreenStar Network (GSN) • CANARIE pilot project • Develop technology and standards for reducing the carbon footprint and providing ICT infrastructure services for users • Infrastructure (GSN Testbed) • several GSN nodes (servers, disc arrays, switches, routers) • dedicated optical links supported by CANARIE. • powered by renewable energy sources (Solar/Wind/Hydro) • Instrumentation (sensors, power monitors and PDUs) • Use case description • GSN facility is used by PII user (via Teagle) to measure the energy consumption when running experiment (eg. Transcoding) 8

  9. GSN – Panlab integration use case Logical view
