  4. Nervous System Brain – becomes less able 2 control T body. Movement, speech & vision affected Memory – Thought process is disorganized & dulled. Judgment – Altered & coordination is impaired Cardiovascular Sys Heart – Low intake causes increase in heart rate & blood pressure. Higher intake heart rate & blood pressure decrease & heart rhythm irregular. Risk of cardiac arrest increases. Blood Vessels – Blood vessels expand. Body temperature drops. Short-Term Effects of Drinking

  5. Digestive System Stomach – Acid production increases & often results in nausea & vomiting. Liver – Toxic chemicals R released as T liver metabolizes alcohol. Cause inflammation and scarring. Kidneys – Causes kidneys 2 increase urine output, leading 2 dehydration. Respiratory System Lungs – Carbon dioxide formed by T liver is released from T body through T lungs. Breathing – depress nerves that control involuntary functions such as breathing, Excessive amt of alcohol slows breathing, becomes irregular or stops. Short-Term Effects of Drinking

  6. Alcohol and Drug Interactions • Mixing Alcohol & drugs leads to: • Illness • Injury • Death. • One-fourth of emergency incidents R from mixing drugs & alcohol Presence of both alcohol & drugs is very dangerous. OTC drugs as well as prescribed medicines R dangerous when mixed w/alcohol.

  7. Alcohol and Drug Interactions Typical alcohol-drug interactions are: • Alcohol slows down body’s absorption of drugs. Thus it increase T time T alcohol is in T body. Increasing risk of harmful side effects from T drug. • Drinking frequently increases T metabolizing enzymes, causing medications 2 B broken down faster & decreases their effectiveness. • Metabolizing enzymes chgs some medications into chemicals than damage T liver or other organs. (Alcohol & Acetaminophen, a common painkiller/fever reducer, cause damage 2 T liver. • Alcohol increase effects with some drugs (Antihistamines & alcohol cause excessive dizziness T sleepiness.

  8. Driving Under the Influence. • Alcohol impairs • Vision • Reaction time • Coordination. • Slows reflexes • Reduces a person’s ability to judge distances and speeds • Increases risk-taking behaviors • Reduces a person’s concentration while increasing forgetfulness. • DWI – Drive While Intoxicated • DUI – Driving Under the Influence • Leading cause of death among teens • Intoxication level is 0.1 percent BAC • Some state .08

  9. Consequences of DWI • When stopped U R given a sobriety test than a breathalyzer 2 measure T BAC • Consequences include: • Harm 2 driver & others • Severely restricted driving privileges or confiscation of Dr Lic. • Injuries, property damage & death • Living w/regret & remorse • Loss of parental trust & respect • Arrest, jail time, court appearance, & a heavy fine or bail • Police record & possible lawsuits • Higher insurance rates (3 x higher) • Riding with a driver who has been drinking is serious.

  10. Rapid drinking done on a bet is dangerous & possible consume a fatal dose. Alcohol a depressant shuts down involuntary actions such as breathing & T gag reflex that prevents choking. Person can choke & asphyxiate on their own vomit. Binge Drinking Alcohol Poisoning

  11. Effects of Alcohol Poisoning • Symptoms indicating alcohol poisoning include: • Mental confusion, stupor, coma, inability 2 B roused, vomiting & seizures. • Slow respiration – 10 seconds b/w breaths or fewer than 8 breaths a minute • Irregular heartbeat • Hypothermia, or low body temperature- pale or blush skin color • Severe dehydration from vomiting
