  2. HAITI: History • Originally settled by the Spanish in 1492 (hence the island name Hispaniola) • 1697 Spain ceded to the French the western third of the island, which later became Haiti

  3. HAITI: History • The French colony, based on forestry and sugar-related industries, became one of the wealthiest in the Caribbean but only through the heavy importation of African slaves

  4. HAITI: History • Francois-Domingue Toussaint (Toussaint L’Ouverture) was born a slave in the mid-1700’s in Haiti • His father was captured into slavery and would tell Toussaint stories of freedom

  5. HAITI: History • 1789, the French Revolution occurred and the French decided to grant freedom to all Africans and Mulattoes • In 1791, after the plantation owners whined like a bunch of 6th graders, they (the French) revoked their (the slaves) freedom

  6. HAITI: History • Now the slaves were mad! • 1794, Toussaint leads a slave army and defeats the French army (1st of the Latin American revolutions) • In 1801 Toussaint is named “Governor-General” for life

  7. HAITI: History • 1802, L’Ouverture is tricked, arrested, and sent to France. He dies in France. • Jean Jacques Dessalines finishes what Toussaint started and in 1804 Haiti gains independence

  9. HAITI: Government • Today, Haiti has a democratic republic government • Haiti has both a President and a Prime Minister • President elected by popular vote for a five-year term • President chooses the Prime Minister wh0 has to be ratified by the National Assembly

  10. HAITI: Government • President today is Michel Martelly • Prime Minister Garry Conille • The President is the Chief Executive and the Prime Minister is the Head of State • Suffrage: 18 yrs old

HAITI: Government • Haiti has a history of political unrest with the constitution being suspended and reinstated between 1988-89, 1991-94, and 04-06 • In 2004, an armed rebellion led to the forced resignation and exile of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide • Haiti finally had a democratically elected president and parliament in May of 2006
