  2. January 11, 1992 Dear Diary, Guess what happened today? I got a job as a tailor at the same place Alicia works at, how great is that? Now I’ll be earning money just like Mama! But the place where we do all the sewing is very cramped, there’s probably at least 20 people in a small room doing sewing at once! Also, most of the other tailors are twice my age which makes it a bit uncomfortable for me but beside me is a girl my age, she’s very nice, I hope we become close friends! Although I don’t get paid much and the room we work in is quite uncomfortable, I just hope to be able to make enough money to feed Oscar and Julia, wish me luck!

  3. January 14, 1992 Dear Diary, Right now I’m outside a church eating food with Tomas and Oscar! How great is that? And that’s not the only good thing, the food was given to us free by the church! And they do this everyday! So now, I don’t have to worry as much about feeding Oscar since Julia just got a job! Hopefully this will help everyone’s strength so that our lives can be better! Well, Julia is expecting food soon so I’d better go, hopefully this food will make Julia have a strong healthy baby!

  4. January 15, 1992 Dear Diary, Today didn’t go as quite expected. Today at work, a group of Shadow men came into our sewing room at asked for our ID’s. Right when they came in, everyone in the roomed screamed and tried to escape, one women even tried to jump out of the window! When this happened, Alicia immediately signaled to me to hide under the table, at first I was puzzled and lost, but once I knew what was really happening, I dove under a table with cloth over it to remain hidden. I stayed there for almost two hours until I decided to leave. When I stood up, everything was silent, I was scared and dehydrated, once I was sure the close was clear, I dived for the exit door and ran out of the building and headed home. Once I got home, I ran around the house looking for Alicia, but when I couldn’t find her, I realized that she had been taken, I hope she’s ok…

  5. January 26, 1992 Dear Diary, You won’t believe what just happened, Julia finally gave birth to little baby Ramona! It happened about half and hour ago! Julia decided to name the baby Ramona because the baby’s father’s name is Ramon. Dona Elena said Ramona is strong and healthy which made me calm down after seeing the pain Julia had gone through before she gave birth. Julia needs me now so I got to go. Hopefully Ramona will grow up to be strong and beautiful just like Mama!

  6. February 2, 1992 Dear Diary, Well I’ve just finished planning my trip back to El Salvador to get Teresa. I have so many things to worry about, what if when I’m gone Julia and Oscar get caught and get sent back to El Salvador? What if I get caught by the Shadow men on my way there? What will happen to Julia, Oscar, and Ramona? But I don’t really have choice, Teresa is going to die if I don’t get her so I guess leaving is a must. Hopefully I come back safely with Teresa…

  7. This is the diary of Maria, a 15 year old protagonist of the book Journey of the Sparrows. Each entry is about when Maria goes through some change that would effect her lifestyle. Throughout the climax part of Journey of the Sparrows Maria went through quite a few changes but the ones that I have picked out are the ones in which I think are the main ones.
