  3. Raising Confidence About Sexuality Issues • Policy on Sexual Orientation 2004/05 • Staff Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Focus Group • Student LGBT group

  4. Research Initiatives • Catherine Donovan: Research on domestic violence in same-sex relationships • Elizabeth Atkinson and Renee DePalma: Research on exploring approaches to LGBT equality in schools

  5. Next Steps • Address inconsistency across institution • Continue to embed LGBT equality • Began monitoring in staff survey March 07 • Strengthen links with City

  6. Missed Opportunities • Sunderland not seen as diverse and inclusive • LGBT community not attracted to study, work and invest in the North East • Benefits being lost

  7. Way Forward • Sunderland LGBT Independent Advisory Group • Not just institutional improvement • City needs to promote LGBT inclusivity • Build on and champion good practice • Work to re-brand city and region

  8. Vision An inclusive and supportive environment that enriches our lives and enables all of us to achieve our potential.
