2. History • After September 11th the united states took extreme measures to make sure an event like that would never happen again. • Some of these measures include: heightened security measures, face recognition devices, random searches of internet content, use of wire taps to intercept e-mail, use of racial profiling to target suspects, ability to demand records of somebody, and tracking. • These measures have been associated with the loss of liberty, but are very important in assuring that an attack like 9/11 will not happen again.

3. History Cont. • After events such as 9/11 and the attempted Christmas day bombing security is becoming more and more of an issue and demands more attention than liberty. • Liberty can not exist without some form of security to protect it. • Recently airports have been experimenting with the use of full body scanners. Which has drawn attack from supporters of liberty, but these scanners could be vital in preventing future terrorist attacks.

4. Security vs. Liberty • The acts that the United States have taking for security reasons requires a preemptive approach where terrorist are stopped before they can act. • This requires anticipating and planning for possible events in the future. • In order to do this we need to learn from past events such as 9/11 which shows us that to prevent terrorist attacks we must improve on our security measures. • For us to prevent future terrorist attacks it is important that we involve some form of surveillance and investigation.

Reasons why we need secuirty • 9/11/2001 • The hijackers intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centers in New York City, killing everyone on board and many others working in the buildings. Both buildings collapsed within two hours, destroying nearby buildings and damaging others. The hijackers crashed a third airliner into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. The fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville in rural Pennsylvania after some of its passengers and flight crew attempted to retake control of the plane, which the hijackers had redirected toward Washington, D.C. There were no survivors from any of the flights. • The death toll of the attacks was 2,995, including the 19 hijackers.[

Cont. • 12/25/2009- Christmas day bombing • Congressional investigators say some of the same intelligence failures that led to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks also allowed a Nigerian to slip on board a U.S.-bound jetliner with a bomb on Dec.25, Christmas Day. • Bomb suspect Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a Muslim Nigerian citizen attempted to detonate plastic explosives hidden in his underwear onboard Northwest airlines flight 253 to Detroit Michigan. • To prevent these types of events from happening in the future the United States needs to crack down on security even if it requires sacrificing a small bit of liberty.

7. Expectations of Privacy • In the past information either did not exists or was difficult to find, but due to modern technology it is now increasingly available and useful. • When such information is needed to prevent catastrophic outcomes, the government must have power to access the information under appropriate procedures. • This will require previous assumptions that data was unavailable and private to adapt an accordance to modern technology

9. Conclusion • In today’s society we can not risk another catastrophic event due to lack of security. • Although this country was built on the principles of freedom it is becoming more evident that security is needed to protect our citizens from increasingly dangerous threats in the world today.
