  2. How to write a 4-sentence summary • When responding to something you read, the first thing you should do is summarize the text. The following elements must be in your 4-sentence summary: ______________________________________________________ • Title, Author, Genre(short story, poem, novel, essay, speech) • Setting: Time Period/Era(optional, EXCEPT when the time period influences the plot)and Location • Main conflict and characters • Plot Overview: What is it about? How does it turn out?(summarize the plot into no more than one sentence)

  3. Enhancements: • Once you become skilled at condensing the information needed into four sentences, you may find more room to add extra information. The following is a great start: a. Comment on the universal theme or author’s message about life to readers b. Comment on major literary elements used by the author c. Comment on something striking or interesting in the author’s writing style

  4. Example 4-sentence summary: LABEL THE PARTS • In the children’s fairy tale, “The Three Little Pigs,” by James Marshall, three little pigs leave home to seek their fortunes. In the rural countryside, each little pig constructs a home out of different materials. A hungry wolf, also known as the “Big Bad Wolf,” succeeds at blowing down the first two pigs’ homes while the third pig, having built his house out of bricks, outsmarts the Big Bad Wolf causing him to jump into a pot of boiling water at the bottom of a chimney. Ultimately, the author of this fairy tale teaches us that hard work and enterprise triumphs over evil forces and misfortune (the wolf).
