Definition • Narrative poetry is a form of poetry which tells a story, often making use of the voices of a narrator and characters; the entire story is usually written in metered verse. • Metered verse is the basic rhythmic structure of a verse or lines in a verse • Verse is basically a line in a poetic composition (poem)

  3. Examples • An example of narrative poetry is Past-Life Nightmareby Carolyn Devonshire Here is an excerptofanarrative poem: Past-Life Nightmare A child of four suffers recurring dreams, disturbing parents and siblings with screams. When she awoke, always sore in one knee; next to a birthmark, it throbbed painfully. Night after night she feared going to bed. What caused these nightmares that raged in her head? Even when grown, the torment persisted, so a therapist’s aid she enlisted. “Hypnosis,” said he, “might offer some clues. Why not try it? You’ve just bad dreams to lose.” Once under, he guided her to a room -- here people’s lifetimes in books were entombed.

Examples • The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe is another example of narrative poetry: • Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore— While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door— "'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door— Only this and nothing more.”

  5. History • The narrative poem’s history goes back to the oral tradition, when stories were passed down person to person and often memorized in the process. • Without narrative poetry, many of the stories we love, like Robin Hood and the story of Troy would be lost in history.

  6. How To Write a Narrative Poem • Tips to Writing a Narrative Poem • Think of your main character, a person or animal. And then write a small statement about the character. • Start with a draft of the poem. What do you want to happen to the character throughout the poem? • Choose an event to start the poem. The event will help you portray the perfect feel, thought, and image to your poem. • Once you know where you want to go with your poem, start writing.
