  2. NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY • Generous land grants & religious tolerance soon brought Jews, French, Huguenots, Puritans and others. • Peter Stuyvesant led the colony of New Amsterdam in 1647

  3. NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY CONTINUED • 1664= An English fleet captured the colony (Renamed New York) • Fur trade = Important to the economy

  4. QUAKER • Quakers = Largest religious group in New Jersey • Believed in equality of men and women • Supported nonviolence and religious tolerance • Beliefs and practices shocked most Christians (persecuted in both England and America)

  5. WILLIAM PENN • Wanted to found a colony that would serve as a safe home for Quakers • 1681 – King Charles II agreed to grant Penn a charter to begin a colony west of New Jersey • Promised religious freedom to all Christians

  6. DELAWARE • 1682 – 1775 – Delaware part of Pennsylvania • 1776 – Delaware splits from Pennsylvania

  7. ECONOMY OF THE MIDDLE COLONIES • Grew staple crops (crops that were always in need) • Slaves worked in cities as skilled labors Others worked on farms and onboard ships • Indentured servants filled the growing labor needs

  8. ECONOMY CONTINUES • 1760-Philadelphia is largest British colonial city • Trade-important • Women made important contributions to the economy (ran farms and businesses) Some practiced medicine. Most women worked in the home
