  1. B737 GPS/FMS Part 5: Flight Plan Entry YEG-YYZ

  2. Background • This will be a PTT exercise with a flight plan from Edmonton to Toronto • The departure from Edmonton will be from RWY 30 and arrivals in Toronto are using RWY 24L and 24R • Do Not Reset the PTT or Exit from the PTT at he conclusion of this module as the flight plan you have just created will be used in Part 6 to “fly” the PTT to Toronto

  3. Start the PTT • Load the databases by selecting the database files, Caxxxx.ldr • When asked to select company routes, select “Cancel” • Notice that the MCDU will go through a self test of the annunciator lights • Choose FMS 1 Requesting <LSK 1>

  4. Verify Databases • if the database is out of date, select the secondary database <LSK 3R> to move it into the scratchpad • Move the new database into the active <LSK 2R> • Once Database is verified select POS INIT <LSK 6R>

  5. Verify Time and Date are correct • REF AIRPORT should be the current airport. • Note: • if FMS was OFF during aircraft movement around the airport, it may take a few moments upon power-up for the FMS to determine its position • for PTT simulation, the REF AIRPORT will have to be entered via the scratchpad (CYEG) and <LSK 2L>

  6. Choose INIT/REF <LSK 6L> • Choose SET UP <LSK 5L>

  7. Verify Display is (MAG) or (TRUE), as required • Verify FMS IS (SYNCHRONIZED) • Note: the green caret beside <LSK 1L> and <LSK 5L> means that the pilot can toggle between the two choices (MAG and TRUE or SYNCHRONIZATION and INDEPENDENT) • Select ROUTE <LSK 6R> to begin entering the flight plan

  8. Enter the destination airport into the scratchpad (CYYZ) then move it to the DEST field by selecting <LSK 1R> • Note: • the DEST field is a mandatory field • RUNWAY, FLT NO, etc. are optional fields _ _ _ _ _ _ • the RTE becomes a MOD(ified) route with reverse CYAN

  9. the EXEC command becomes available meaning that new, executable information has been entered but not executed • the ERASE (LSK 6L> is now available. Using ERASE will eliminate all entries since the last EXEC selection • Enter the departure runway (30) onto the scratchpad then <LSK 2L> • Enter Flight Number (956) onto the scratchpad then <LSK 2R>

  10. Using the DEP ARR Function, select the appropriate departure from CYEG (if applicable) using <LSK 1L>

Select ROUTE to display the RTE page. • Enter the flight plan into the FMS as per the flight plan route as filed with ATC: “DCT CAMRA J515 YXE J576 YXZ J525 YMS V164 YYZ” • ‘Direct to’ Waypoints are entered on the right side • Airways are entered on the left side with a terminating waypoint on the right side. • NEXT is used to access another RTE page if necessary.

  12. Select PROG and ‘PREV’ to access PROG page 4/4. Enter the current altimeter setting (LSK 6R). The altimeter setting is required to provide baro-corrected altitude to enable automatic sequencing of departure or departure transition procedure legs with altitude terminations.

  13. Select LEGS • The Capt will confirm the bearing and distance to each waypoint on the flight plan agrees with those read from the legs page by the F/O. • On confirmation from the Capt that the entered flight plan is correct, the Capt will instruct the F/O to “EXECUTE” • .

  14. As another check for data input accuracy, select PROG page 2/4 and compare distance to DEST with flight plan total distance. The distance may not be exact but should be ‘reasonably close’.

  15. The STAR, TRANSITION and APPROACH will normally be programmed just prior to Top of Descent after having received a clearance and/or the arrival information. • Select DEP ARR • Use the PREV or NEXT key to locate the appropriate arrival page. • Select the STAR • Select the Transition • Select the Approach • Select the APPROACH TRANS

  16. Note: This entry (destination altimeter setting) would be made just prior to top of descent . Select PROG and ‘PREV’ to access PROG page 4/4. Enter the current altimeter setting (LSK 6R). The altimeter setting is required to provide baro-corrected altitude to enable automatic sequencing of arrival or missed approach procedure legs with altitude terminations.

  17. Do Not Reset the PTT or Exit from the PTT as the flight plan you have just created will be used in Part 6 to “fly” the PTT to Toronto
