  2. 鍬形蟲的簡介 一般推論不外兩方面的因素所致：內在方面源自於遺傳基因的影響；外在方面則可能源自於幼生期階段的複雜客觀環境所致，其中包括食物（多為林中各類枯朽樹木）的充足與否或營養多寡，棲息木的溼度、硬度、腐朽程度、種類成分或有無菌類孳生，棲息環境的氣候、日照程度與日夜溫差，棲息木內有無同種或他種幼蟲相互干擾與競爭，還有幼生期的長短（同種鍬形蟲的幼生期常有1~2或3年的不同長短變化）等因素。然而，對於影響鍬形蟲雄蟲外觀懸殊的機制究竟為何，至今尚無學術研究上的定論。更何況不同的主客觀條件，對雌蟲僅會造成體型大小的差異，而唯獨雄蟲大顎等部位，會因體型大小出現懸殊卻穩定的外觀變化，這在演化上有無特殊的意義？應是值得深究的課題。
